Lexlee's Kids is a Baton Rouge, LA based non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community through safety education. Our mission is to save and improve the lives of children ages 0-18, by empowering caregivers and youth through awareness of injury risks and prevention.
Recently, our community has been affected by catastrophic flooding that has left thousands of families with nothing. Much like Katrina, this is our prediction. These families have lost everything and are in shelters or displaced with family and friends. They will eventually leave those locations and their children will not have CAR SEATS to ride in; while motor vehicle crashes are already the #1 cause of death and injury for children ages 2 years+. Normal residents, displaced families and individuals coming in for clean-up and restoration will soon fill our roads. As the traffic in our area grows and becomes very congested, more risks will be created for road users.
In addition to car seats, another need that should be brought to light is the need for safe sleeping areas for children. Sleep deaths are the #1 cause of death for children ages 1 and under. There is a desperate need for PACK-N-PLAYs/PORTABLE CRIBS for children, as many of them will be utilizing shelters or living mobile until they find permanent residence.
