Help Build Mebuyan Pulse for Burning Man 2026

<div>I'm Will, a Deaf artist and engineer, and this summer I'm building <strong>"Can You Read My Lips?"</strong>, a 15-foot billboard for Burning Man, glowing with <strong>1,531</strong> individually-addressable LEDs bright enough to read from afar.

<div>"Can you read my lips?" is the hearing world's default: the easy assumption that skips the work and puts it all on us. Even the best lipreaders catch maybe a third of what's said, and the rest is the Deaf person filling the gaps. So why not learn a little sign language to make our days brighter?

<div>This year will be my tenth time going to Black Rock City, but this is the first time I'm putting art on the open playa! It's the result of years of asking myself "what do I want to do next for Burning Man".
</div>

<div><strong>Where the money goes:</strong> straight into materials. Aluminum composite panels, the 1,531 LED dome pixels and their power, batteries, the guyed frame and anchors that make sure the billboard stays put and doesn't harm people in unpredictable weather, and the controller that drives it all.

</div>
<div>Gifting is one of the ten principles of Burning Man: a gift is unconditional, given freely with nothing expected in return. This project is my gift to the playa, shared for a week and then taken home without a trace. It's mostly self-funded, and <strong>I've set a $5,000 goal toward materials.</strong> That won't cover the whole build, so anything you can give, and anything past the goal, helps more than you'd think. <strong>If it lands with you, light a pixel!</strong>

Light Up 'Can You Read My Lips?' at Burning Man

<div>I am super excited to have the honor of being a 2026 Burning Man Artist. Dozens of hours and hundred of dollars have already been poured into the lotus, but more is still needed.

<div>The Luma Lotus is an interactive sculptural piece designed to invite passerby’s to take a moment to stop, climb inside, and be present with the moment and those around them.

<div>In order to make the lotus Playa ready, the light system needs to be upgraded, and funds to help transport are also being considered. The goal is to get a completely solar powered system to run the lighting, allowing for it to be run fully on renewable energy. Better for the environment, cleaner for power, but hefty on the pockets.  Majority of the goal amount will help to cover the costs of this.

Bring 'Are You Still There?' to Burning Man 2026

Heart Remains is a monumental light sculpture rising from the open desert. A suspended heart form is held within rib-like structures that appear both protective and exposed. Subtle movement and shifting light give the piece a quiet sense of breath and presence. At night, illumination reveals the delicate inner geometry of the structure. The work reflects the need for emotional boundaries that people create to remain true to themselves while staying soft at their core. Balancing strength and vulnerability, Heart Remains explores how protection can exist without hardness, and how the heart can remain open while still honoring its soft nature.

 This project was born from a desire to create immersive art experiences that bring people together through creativity, connection, and radical self-expression. I was incredibly honored to receive the Honoraria Grant from Burning Man Project, which gave the project an important foundation and recognition. However, large-scale interactive artworks come with significant additional costs beyond the grant itself, including engineering, fabrication, transportation, lighting, installation, safety infrastructure, and on-site operations. I started this fundraiser to help bridge that gap and bring the full vision to life in the way it was intended. Community support plays a direct role in transforming the concept into a living experience that people can gather around, interact with, and remember. Every contribution becomes part of the artwork’s story and helps make ambitious independent art possible.

 Funds will help cover transportation and lighting for the Heart Remains installation, ensuring the piece can be safely delivered, set up, and illuminated as intended. Heart Remains: Light Sculpture for Burning Man

I’m Early, and for 28 years I’ve had the joy of running Videogasm, a Burning Man theme camp that’s been a welcoming home for campers and event visitors alike. Our camp has always been a labor of love, built and sustained by our group without any corporate sponsorship. Last year, the storms at Burning Man hit us hard, causing significant damage to our shade structures and vinyl signage—items we’ve relied on for nearly three decades to create a comfortable and vibrant space for everyone who stops by.

 This year, we’re facing an unusual amount of damage that goes beyond what we’ve ever experienced. Replacing these structures and signage is essential for us to recover and continue offering the same welcoming environment and memorable events that Videogasm is known for. Every dollar raised will go directly toward rebuilding what was lost, ensuring our camp can thrive and keep bringing people together at Burning Man.

<div>For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of documenting the creation of one of the most meaningful art installations in the world: The Temple at Burning Man.
</div>

<div>I live with the crew on the playa for over four weeks as we construct this massive, ephemeral space — a place for remembrance, healing, hope, and transformation. As volunteers build the Temple, I capture the heart and humanity behind it through photography, video, and drone footage. It’s my way of giving something back — a gift to the community, and to all the volunteers who pour their energy into this space.

<div>This is more than just a creative project — it’s my calling. After 40 years as a professional photographer, this work pushes me to my limits, both artistically and personally. I do it with love and I do it for free, because I believe in its value. But every year, it gets harder to sustain financially.

<div>New this year is an art project related to my media project (Capturing the Heart of The Temple). I'll share details when it's ready, but it's quite exciting. The name is Moon Base Niblet, named after my good friend Niblet (Chase) who suggested this idea. I'm quite excited!

I can no longer do this on my own.

<div>We're a community of snow sport lovers who embody the Burning Man principles both on playa and on the mountain.

<div>The entire operation is co-run by just the two of us: Dylan Hogan (aka Major Trouble) and Rachael Gingery (aka MORE!). While we have dedicated campers who support our efforts, the financial liability, planning, and responsibilities fall solely on us.

<div><strong>The Slope Has Become Burning Man Famous</strong>
</div>

<div>Because word of the ski slope had spread through social media and our Kickstarter, we were shocked the first year when nearly half the people who came to ride brought their own gear to playa, and started lining up before we even opened.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As our campers arrived, they couldn't contain their amusement after seeing several cars in line, driving into the desert in the middle of summer, with skis and snowboards strapped to the roof. It was the perfect amount of Burning Man absurdity.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Since our (sl)opening day, the slope has seen hundreds–if not thousands–of riders. Our rental shop is typically open during event week from 3-5 p.m. and 7-11 p.m., so people can shred the gnar on Esplanade, overlooking the playa while being cheered on by everyone at the bottom… and at least one obnoxious camper with a megaphone.
</div>

<div>In 2024 we added a kicker, and talented riders were finally able to get some air: front flips, 360s, and all kinds of tricks. This year, we plan to bring even more après vibes with high-energy music on the slope, as we partner with our sister camp BRC Ski Resort and Entheos, who is bringing a full-stage setup.

<div><strong>The Slope Is Truly a Labor of Love</strong>
</div>

<div>As absurd as our gift is, what keeps us going is the reaction from those who get to experience it.
</div>

<div>From the guy in the wheelchair whose friends carried him to the top so he could sled down, to our friend who said it immediately took him back to sledding in childhood, to the boarder who lost his brother–only to learn that the scaffolding infrastructure was designed by Rob Giustina, who built the slopes they used to ride together in Tahoe.
</div>

<div><strong>"The Girl Who Fell" Wants to Keep Burning Man Questionably Dangerous</strong>

<div>You may recall hearing about the girl who fell 20 feet off an art installation on playa in 2024 and landed in the hospital with a fractured spine, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a bruised spleen.
</div>

</div>
<div>That was Rachael.

<div>The irony of that happening on another installation–when we bring something that seems like it should be one of the most dangerous things on playa–was not lost on us.

<div>But that's the point. Burning Man is supposed to be a little dangerous.
</div>

<div>That said, we still take safety seriously.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Safety Third… But Not Really</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Older burners may remember "The Wedge," a 45-degree incline covered in astroturf on playa that was responsible for numerous serious injuries. When we first built the ski slope in 2023, people mentioned “The Wedge” so frequently that we did what Burners do... we made stickers.
</div>
<div><br />

<div>But the slope is definitely #notthewedge, and here's what we do to make sure:

<li>Trained campers staff the slope during all hours of operation
</li>
<li>One lead on-site at all times carrying a radio directly to medical
</li>
<li>All skiers and snowboarders are required to wear helmets
</li>
<li>Proper gear inspection and adjustments before every ride
</li>
<li>Sobriety and safety checkpoints as riders prepare to go up
</li>
<li>Annual check-in with ESD to confirm no serious reported injuries from riding the slope
</li>
<li>Planned safety and structural upgrades each year
</li>
</ul>

<div>We've operated for three years without a single serious reported injury. That's something we're genuinely proud of and work incredibly hard to maintain.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But the only way we can bring the slope and operate it the way we do is if we bring it as a camp.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>We Receive Zero Support From the Org </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We bring a large-scale interactive experience to the playa, but because we operate as a theme camp, we are ineligible for the art grants available to installations. That means we receive zero funding from the Burning Man Organization while also having to purchase our own tickets and personally cover every cost required to bring the slope back each year.
</div>

</div>

<div><strong>Camps Are Struggling This Year and We're No Exception</strong>

<div>It's no secret that Burning Man has changed, and we know we're not the only camp struggling this year. The impact of the decisions made by the org’s leadership paired with the current economic climate have left us staring at a potentially serious financial problem.
</div>

<div>Some of our core campers can't attend this year and finding new ones has been a challenge. There's been a shift toward "bucket list" culture where many attendees are looking for camps that offer the most amenities at the lowest cost. As you might imagine, there are plenty of camps whose gifts and operating expenses are lower than ours.

<div><strong>We Did Our Best to Close the Gap</strong>

<div>We poured months of planning and weeks of building into each of the two fundraiser events we threw this year in the Bay Area. We gave it everything we had, called in every favor we could, and produced two events at a fraction of the market cost–and still came up shorter than we'd hoped.

<div>Snow Club is a two-person labor of love, and somehow we've pulled off something truly unprecedented three years in a row. But we're not in the same position we were in when we started.

<div>Dylan has been building his career as a music producer and DJ, Major Trouble, since 2024. Rachael was laid off in 2024 and, after recovering from her infamous fall, started her own coaching business.

<div><strong>Life evolves, same as Burning Man. And here we are.</strong>

<div>We've given everything we have to bring this gift to playa. Right now we're asking the community to help us keep the Burning Man spirit of questionably dangerous interactivity alive.

<div>If we don't raise enough to cover expenses by August 15, some tough decisions will have to be made - and our hearts may be broken.
