<div>I’ve been thinking about how to write this because Alejandro is not just an immigration case to me. He is not just a number, a court date, or paperwork. He is the person I love. He is someone who has changed my life, and someone I truly believe deserves the chance to keep building the future he has worked so hard for.

<div>Alejandro is 18 years old and came to the United States from Cali, Colombia about three years ago. He is currently fighting his immigration case, with his next court date coming up in October. <div>On March 30, 2025, Alejandro started his photography page, @1of1official._. He started with nothing except his passion and his willingness to put in the work. He would spend hours waiting at gas stations or different places hoping to find the perfect cars to photograph. Then he would go home, edit, and keep improving.

<div>He doesn’t do it because it’s easy. He does it because creating something means something to him. Even when he would put all that work in to get 2 likes, he never got discouraged I never once heard him complain.

<div>He has been consistent since the beginning. If he hasn’t posted, it bothers him because being consistent is important to him. That dedication has already taken him places. He has been invited to events, people have reached out to pay him for his work, and one of his videos reached over 1 million views and 264,000 likes.

<div>What makes me proud of Alejandro is not just what he has accomplished. It is the person he has remained through everything.

<div>One of the biggest things Alejandro has taught me is that love does not always look the way we expect it to. Before him, I thought love was mostly about saying things and showing things in the same ways that I did. But Alejandro taught me that sometimes love is quieter.

<div>Sometimes love is cooking for someone. Sometimes it is remembering a small thing they mentioned weeks ago and surprising them with it. Sometimes it is giving when you don’t have much to give.

<div>Something I’ve learned about him is that his silence does not mean he doesn’t care. Sometimes when he is overwhelmed, he needs time to understand what he is feeling before he can put it into words. I used to think that if someone wasn’t immediately saying what was wrong, maybe they didn’t care enough to explain. But loving Alejandro taught me that people carry things differently.

<div>He is someone who feels deeply. He just does not always show it in the loudest way.

<div>But when he finally opens up, when he finally lets you see what is going on inside his mind, you realize there was so much more there than anyone could have seen from the outside.

<div>The thing that hurts me the most is knowing that while I was getting to know him, falling in love with him, and building memories with him, he was also carrying the fear of possibly losing the life he built here.

<div>Alejandro loves his family deeply. His relationship with his mom, dad, and little sister is something I admire so much. He speaks to them with so much love and respect. They are a small, close family, and they have always been there for each other.

<div>During one of the hardest moments in my own life, his family made me feel safe. They told me their home was my home. They fed me, cared for me, and reminded me what it feels like to be surrounded by genuine kindness.

<div>Hi, my name is Kim Henderson. I am reaching out asking for your support during a very hard time. <strong>My boyfriend, Mack Day, has had a very traumatic week.</strong> It started last Sunday when he awoke with an epistaxis (nosebleed) that lasted for hours. After about 5-6 hours, when we couldn't get the blood to stop flowing, we decided that we needed to go try to get medical attention. We went to the hospital in Winder, where the first of many visits began.

<div>The doctor first tried to use medication in his nose (nasal spray) to try to constrict the blood vessels to stop the bleeding and then clamped his nose tightly. That didn't work, so they installed a Rapid Rhino inside his nose, which consists of the doctor installing and inflating a posterior balloon inside his nose as far as it can go and then inflating the balloon to provide pressure to try to stop the bleeding. This usually stops the bleeding, per the doctor, and then you follow up with an ENT in 2 days to have the rhino removed and then evaluate to see what, if anything, needs to be done next. Well, this didn't last 10 minutes, and he continued to bleed out.

<div>He had so much blood in his stomach from his nose draining down the back of his throat, he ended up throwing up about 1-1.5 liters of blood. I asked if they had an "on-call" ENT there, and they said they didn't. The doctor then evaluated his nose again and ended up cauterizing what he thought he saw was the problem, and then we were given instructions to follow up with an ENT. Everyone at the hospital in Winder was great; they were very quick to try to get the problem fixed. Once at home, nothing was getting any better; there was no relief, and then not long after we were home, the blood started pouring again. He took it easy, hoping it would get better through the night, but it didn't.

<div>Monday, we decided to go to NE GA in Braselton to have a doctor look and see if they could figure out what was going on. They tried to use medication to restrict the blood vessels, clamped his nose again, and then decided to install a much longer rhino inside his nose, packed it, and told us to follow up with an ENT in 2 days to have it removed and evaluated. I asked the doctor at this hospital about calling in an on-call ENT, and they informed us, like the hospital in Winder, that they don't usually call an ENT in unless your hemoglobin drops drastically (to 6). Once we thought we were fixed up again, we came home. He stayed on the sofa, took it easy, only getting up to use the restroom, and tried to see if it would stop. We thought he was good. His nose started bleeding again during the night. We didn't know if it was from having the rhino installed (2nd time) and maybe he had some blood that may have not bled out and maybe was just left over from the initial bleed or what was going on. He took it easy and laid around on the sofa all day Tuesday so he could try to get to work on Wednesday. He went to work on Wednesday but was only there a few hours until it started pouring out again. I called several ENT offices, everywhere, to try to get him in to see what was going on. Which was hard at the last minute. I finally found an ENT in Johns Creek; he went, and they performed a procedure in the office where the ENT took 2 cm out of his septum and cauterized his nose for the 2nd time. We were confident that it was fixed. He left the ENT with no aftercare instructions, no medication, nothing. I called and spoke with that office on Thursday, letting them know he was in pain, no instructions were given, and he was still bleeding. They seemed to not be concerned since they were paid over $400.00, which we didn't have, to fix the problem the day before, and informed me that he was probably still bleeding because his blood pressure might be elevated. They told me that he could go back to the hospital if the bleeding didn't stop for them to check. WHAT?????? They weren't worried about anything. They got paid. This was very upsetting.

<div>Thursday night, the bleeding still had not stopped, and we were back at NE GA Braselton. They did blood work and other things and ended up admitting him. His hemoglobin DROPPED TO 6!!!!!! He was transported by ambulance to NE GA Gainesville on Friday morning, where we have been since. Dr. Baskin, ENT out of Braselton, performed surgery on him Friday afternoon. Surgery was supposed to take about 1-1.5 hrs but ended up taking 3 hrs. The doctor went in and looked at everything, cauterized the main artery, packed his nose as far up in his head, cheek/face, and nose as he could, and is very confident that it is fixed. We still don't know why this happened. Mack doesn't have a history of nosebleeds; nothing like this has ever happened. The doctor said sometimes things happen, and we don't know why. This is one of them. We will probably never know why this started, but we feel confident that he is finally fixed up.

<div>The doctor kept him in the hospital the past 2 days, since Friday, trying to get his hemoglobin up. It has been at a steady 6. It has been a LONG exhausting week for us both! He has had to have 4 bags of blood since he lost so much. His blood pressure has been low; he was very anemic from the blood loss. This was a life-threatening event! It was very scary!

<div>Why did this happen? We might never know why! Why him? Why did it take so long to figure out what was going on, and why did it have to get so bad before someone figured it out? IDK.

</div>

<div>Is there a possibility that it could happen again? Yes, but the doctor is very confident that he is fixed, and we don't have anything to worry about, and I am confident as well. Dr. Baskin is wonderful. He was very detailed about everything. We couldn't have asked for a better doctor. He will have to go in a week to have his packing taken out of his nose and assessed by Dr. Baskin, and we will move on from there.

<div>Mack was out of work all last week.

</div>

<div>The doctor is not letting him return to work for at least 2 weeks, possibly 3. That means he will be out of work for at least a month! The doctor doesn't want him working, straining at all, bending/lifting anything. He basically wants him on the couch for the next 2 weeks for sure, but he might be out longer. <strong>Mack doesn't have medical insurance. He doesn't have sick pay or vacation time. He is STRESSED out as well as myself, worrying what his job will do since he was already out last week and will be out for the next 2 weeks, possibly more, depending on what the doctor says. Bills don't go away; they only continue to build. Our rent is due along with all of my other bills, including car insurance, cell phones, water, and power for the house. I will need to get groceries for us, and I will need gas to get to work and back, and I will need to buy dog food, etc. The bills from our 3 hospital visits, as well as the hospital stay and ambulance ride, will be coming in quickly. He will need medications and follow-up visits with the ENT and possibly other doctors as well.</strong>

<div>We have 3 emergency room visit bills coming, an in-office ENT procedure visit that we paid out of pocket ($405.00) and didn't have, an ambulance ride, and a 4-day stay in the hospital along with all his medications. On top of that, all my household bills are due along with rent, and I can't cover it all!

Kim and Mack's Fight: No Insurance, Big Bills

<div>January 7, 2025 we met Ryan Yergeau while he was living in his car. He was for outside BJs in Middletown holding up a sign for help. It was 15* in the wind chill and Ryan's body was visibly shaking. It could be easy to prejudge Ryan due to his appearance , but he is a soft-spoken, unassuming, intelligent, kind young man with a progressive disease that destroys his skin and leaves him unable to feel the cold. To find out better how to help him, we found the ProJo article about his family from 2023. Please take a look at it for more background. Ryan is connected with all the services available in our area, but there is no housing for him and his family dog. In 2014, another homeless man, Michael Bourque, 34, died in a fire in a moving truck in Newport while trying to keep warm overnight. We cannot let this happen again.

<div>You can see from the original article to the current picture that Ryan's (non-contagious) disease has worsened, leaving him vulnerable to infection and unable to work. The disease affects every organ in his body. He lives in a broken car with his dog "Ryno", by all rights a service dog, but too old to be certified as one. Ryno gives Ryan comfort, purpose and helps reduce anxiety. Thanks to the outpouring of support from the community, our original goal to replace Ryan's car was met, but car living is no longer a realistic goal.

<div>Ryan is not a stranger. He is one of us. He was raised in Middletown. He attended J.F. Kennedy elementary school. He loves reading and fixing things. He loves his namesake dog of 12 years. He has a great sense of humor. He could be any one of our children.

<div>This winter will be worse than last. The car is irreparably broken so the heater no longer works. The weather is now freezing. A small, clean room with the privacy of a bathroom could save these lives.

At Dream Catchers Academy, we aim to support less privileged girls who have experienced homelessness, neglect, or economic hardship. We hope to transform the lives of these girls through housing opportunities, wellness and welfare resources, and access to quality education. Moreover, we provide our girls with an introduction to the arts. An art-based education teaches students that there are multiple approaches to solving problems. Art is our way of keeping our dreams and hopes alive.

<div>By the age of twelve, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I valued creativity and recognized at an early age the unique influence of those in the art and entertainment industries. Yet still, like many of the young girls currently enrolled at Dream Catchers Academy, I was living in extreme poverty. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for both my academic and artistic dreams. However, their efforts often fell short. From overly expensive tuition fees, homelessness, and first-hand trauma, my desire to contribute to the world of entertainment, art, and dance slowly dissipated. By the age of twenty-one, I had an opportunity to leave Nigeria and begin a new life in the United States over time. However, I felt unfulfilled. While my own aspirations were thwarted, I believed I could create opportunities for other young girls who not only struggled in poverty as I had but who also dream of making a living in the arts.

<div>Thus, by twenty-four, I moved back to Nigeria to found the Dream Catchers Academy. My goal and the goal of our team at the academy is to counteract the detriments of growing up in the slums of Nigeria. Slum conditions are especially daunting for young girls. These environments are often laden with poverty and trauma, given that young girls here are often the targets and victims of gender-based violence. Moreover, many of these girls are passionate about the arts. Through the Dream Catchers Academy, I strive to provide hope and opportunity for these girls to not only thrive in their wellness and education but to support their dreams of artistry.

<div>By 2016, I officially launched the Academy. Starting with only five girls, I began my mission to support and provide for the young girls living in poverty who are also passionate about the arts. We then set out to build the first free formal and arts education school in Lagos, Nigeria. This school will cater to 100 girls who are indigent or orphaned and looking to learn more about the arts. With previous donations, in March 2022, we finished constructing a school building for our girls, and the school will serve over 100 girls in our community. Now, we’d like to do even more by providing room and board for girls.

<div>As the academy continues to grow, so as the needs of our girls. This is especially true following the global pandemic of 2020. In the heat of the pandemic, we saw an increase in the vulnerability of indigent girls and the associated threat to their education. Hence, we have more girls in need of housing. As a result, we have our sights set on building a dormitory to fully house our girls. And to realize this goal, we need your support.

All of your donations will be used to build and provide a home in the form of a dormitory and support the need of our growing academy. Our living space will provide a safe and healthy environment for our girls to grow and flourish.
