Dustin was found at approximately 6:30 pm unconscious and in critical condition on the Post Office parking lot in Marystown. Based on CT results and analysis, it is believed that he suffered severe brain trauma resulting in excessive bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull. On November 2nd, Dustin was air lifted to the Health Sciences Center in St. John's, where he underwent immediate emergency brain surgery. Dustin's left side of his skull was removed to allow the brain the space to swell. Physicians and Neurosurgeons advised the family that although this procedure could prevent further brain damage, the damage which was already caused was irreversible. To date, the family does not know the extent to which his injuries will impact him.

Dustin remains in the Special Care Unit at the Health Sciences Center where he continues to be monitored on a 24 hour basis. His movement on his right side was impacted by his injuries, as was his speech. Dustin's cognitive functioning is the biggest concern, as the family was notified that things such as his memory, his processing of information, his overall comprehension of written and verbal communication, all may be impacted and more.

There is no doubt that the road ahead for Dustin and the family will be a long one. It is anticipated that Dustin may be months in recovery, and will undergo intensive therapy in an attempt to regain skills. With all the uncertainty that surrounds the family, there is one thing which is certain. Dustin needs and wants his family by his side. Right from the start of hospital admission, Dustin was responsive to his family. He would hold our hands and squeeze upon hearing our voices, he would reach for us. Yes, he needs time to heal, he needs all the prayers anyone can offer, but there is no doubt, he equally needs his family.

To make this a reality, the family is asking for your help. The cost of travel, meals, accommodations etc., are quickly mounting for the family. Given the duration of time that Dustin may remain in hospital, the family are uncertain how much longer the continuous visitation can be maintained without financial assistance. We are asking the general public to consider making a donation to the Hannam family to aid in lessening the financial strain. Any donation, no matter how small, would be appreciated more than you will ever know.
