Dental Work for Sooty

$970 of $1,000 goal

Sooty is a senior cat who hitched a ride in the engine compartment of a car and found himself who-knows-how-far from home. Clearly he was once someone's pet because he is front declawed and neutered, but he was also clearly starving, so it's difficult to know how long he had been away from home.

He ended up at an overcrowded shelter and they called him "Sooty" because of his markings and the fact that some of his fur was singed during his ordeal. At the shelter his time was quickly running out after his stray hold expired, mainly due to his age.

A volunteer shared his plight on Facebook and my husband and I stepped in to foster him. I took him to the vet last weekend after we noticed that he was having difficulty eating and the vet agreed that he needed a comprehensive dental procedure to extract numerous abcessed teeth (probably most of them).

He's been doing very well otherwise and should have some healthy years ahead of him if we can get him through his dental problems. Unfortunately, dental work is very expensive, so we are reaching out to see if we can crowdfund his care. If we can find him a permanent home in the process, so much the better!

Sooty is the nicest, most mellow cat you could ask for and deserves the chance to live out his days safe, pain-free and loved. If you can, please help us make that happen.

I talked to the vet and Sooty did very well through his procedure. She removed 14 of his teeth, but he got to keep more than expected, including his upper canines. His pre-procedure blood work showed that he has chronic kidney disease, but the vet believes that his condition will improve significantly once he no longer has all of his dental problems making it worse.

Everyone at the vet's office was charmed by how sweet Sooty is. I'm hoping that's a sign that we can easily find him a great forever home. The vet referred to him as "very adoptable."

Today's the day! Sooty is headed to the vet early this morning for his dental procedure. He would like you to know that he is SO HUNGRY because we took his food away at 8:00 p.m. What he doesn't know is that eating is going to be a lot less painful soon. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well!

You guys are the best! We've reached the goal for Sooty's dental care costs, his appointment is on the schedule and he now has the chance to live out his life healthy and happy. Thank you all so much for caring about this sweet kitty.

If you know of anyone who might like to give him a permanent home, please get in touch with me. Thank you all so much!

I just got back from the vet with Sooty and, my, did he complain the whole way there, the entire time we were in the lobby, and the whole way back. I've heard all the cat curse words, I think.

The vet who will be doing his dental looked at his mouth and she thinks the antibiotic shot from last time helped a great deal. She is revising the diagnosis down from stomatitis to "a bunch of bad teeth." He'll still need to have quite a few teeth extracted, but probably not all of them. You can see how swollen his upper lips looks in his original photo; a lot of that has subsided, although the two upper canines do need to be removed.

He has gained another half pound in the two weeks since his last visit, so he's actually within four ounces of weighing 8 pounds now. He was 6.5 when I first met him.

He got another antibiotic shot today and he's ready to be scheduled for his dental procedure at any time. I'll probably have it done in the next couple of weeks, regardless of whether I've reached the full fundraising goal.

Thank you again for all your support. The vet said he's "the luckiest cat in the world," and that's thanks to all of you.
