Tito's Ear Canal Ablation
Donazione protetta
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Tito and I am a 5 year old shar-pei. I came from North Carolina and my parents got me when I was just 8 weeks old. The problem with my breed is I have had A LOT of health issues. I guess it is the price for this cute face!
When I was 6 months old I had my eye lids tacked until I grew into my big head and was old enough to get entropion surgery. Entropion removes excess eyelid skin so I can see and avoids cornea damage to my eyes. I still can't see super well, but am grateful I was able to get this when I was young!
At 1 I discovered the world of allergies. Did you know dogs can be allergic to grass, mold and dust just like humans? Basically I should live in a bubble. I not only suffered from skin allergies, where I constantly had outbreaks, but also ear allergies as well. This is where my largest struggle began.
For those of you that DO know me I shake my head and itch A LOT. This is due to infection and bacteria locked inside my swollen ears. My ear canals are so small you can't even fit a q-tip down it! My mom brought me to a dermatologist where I underwent a variety of procedures to try and suction the infection out. We tried pills, ointments, fluids but nothing is able to get down there due to my inflammed ear canals. It has been over 4 years of treatments with different doctors and we have finally decided I need a Total Ear Canal Ablation also known as TECA.
TECA is a invasive procedure where they remove the inflamed ear canal in order to treat the infected/diseased area. This is only suggested to dogs of severe cases like mine. This procedure will be life changing to my everyday life and cure me of much pain and aggravation inside my ears. It will also allow doctors to work on reducing the disease and infection in my ears. As you can imagine my medical history has not been cheap. Let's just say we could have put a deposit on a home by now with everything I have been through. Woof!
Unfortunately my insurance won't cover any pre existing conditions, which include ears, eyes and skin. Basically all my major health issues! Any help we can get to for this procedure is appreciated. I will be going under the knife come November 8th! While there are some risks to this surgery, I am excited to finally have new ears and live a pain free life.
