Stroke Support for Amanda

Donation protected
Hello. My name is Betty. This fundraising effort is for my best friend and 1st grade teaching partner, Amanda Brummett. She is a wife, mom of two young boys, and has been a teacher for 15 years. She loves outdoor activities like kayaking and camping with her family. Amanda is always thinking of how to improve things and do more. She is kind, loves to laugh, and enjoy life. Above all, Amanda is determined and strong. Those two qualities are what will get her through the challenges she now faces.

Last week Amanda was hospitalized and admitted to the ICU to treat a stroke. This was after three separate E.R. visits- over a month’s time- for terrible headache, nausea, facial paralysis, and other symptoms. She was initially treated for migraine and left to wait for a referral to see a neurologist. At the last attempt to get help, Amanda had lost control of her body and was extremely dizzy and nauseated. Finally, at that time, the medical staff found the problem. Amanda had a big tear in her artery leading to the brain and had suffered a stroke that destroyed a part of her cerebellum. Multiple blood clots and swelling were also found in her brain.

Currently, Amanda is still in the neurological ICU. Each day is a new struggle. The medical staff has been trying desperately to get the swelling down in her brain. Despite tortuous sodium treatments that cause her to shake uncontrollably and cause nausea and great pain in her head there has been little improvement. The tear in her artery- called a vertebral artery dissection- is still causing much pain. It will take up to a year to heal. The stroke caused damage to her cerebellum- which controls her balance and coordination. She is unable to stand on her own at this time. We’re hoping that after the swelling subsides she will be able to start physical therapy to help her learn strategies to compensate for the lost balance. While in ICU, doctors also discovered that Amanda has a congenital heart defect with her arteries. This will require treatment or correction at a later date.

Throughout this week in ICU, Amanda has had an amazingly upbeat attitude. She continues to laugh and joke with staff and visitors. She will not let this crisis keep her down. She will work hard to recover. All the while, her husband Ryan will be doing his best to take care of their boys, the household, and Amanda. It will be a long process toward recovery. Please donate to help with the immense medical expenses that this family will be faced with as Amanda recovers. Amanda's husband, Ryan Brummett, will be the sole beneficiary to this gofundme account.
