Help Us Erect a Permanent Memorial for the Victims of the 1943 Cavan Orphanage Fire

• We are working to create a lasting memorial to honour the 35 children and one adult who lost their lives in the St Joseph’s Orphanage fire in Cavan Town in 1943.
• A dedicated voluntary committee is working in partnership with Cavan County Council, with funding support from the PEACE Plus Programme, which will contribute €10,000 towards the project.
• We are also grateful for the financial support being offered by the Poor Clares and Double Property, who now own the site of the former orphanage. (amount to be confirmed) Their contribution forms part of the overall funding for this memorial.

• The total cost of creating a permanent and dignified memorial is estimated at approximately €70,000.

• Projects of this scale and sensitivity are funded through a combination of public support, private contributions, and community fundraising, reflecting shared responsibility and shared remembrance.

The first Phase of €20,000 Funds to be Raised Will Support:

• Our first community fundraising milestone is €20,000, which will allow us to take the next important steps towards delivering this dignified memorial.

• Design, installation, and site preparation costs

Every contribution brings us closer to ensuring that these children and their cook are properly remembered and honoured in the public space and their story never forgotten.

Thank you for supporting this important and long-overdue memorial.
They were only children.
