Meet My Rescue Pup – A Story of Pain, Hope, and Healing

Donazione protetta
Recently, I rescued an 8-month-old French Bulldog from a deeply neglectful situation. I’d like to share her story with you.

About two months ago, I responded to a Craigslist ad for a Frenchie that was being rehomed. The owner was asking $2,000—more than I could afford at the time, especially knowing there would be ongoing costs for food, vet care, and supplies. Still, I let her know I was very interested, and asked to be kept in mind if her situation changed.

On Monday, June 9th, she texted me unexpectedly to ask if I was still interested in the dog. This time, she wasn’t looking for money—she was looking to give her away. She explained the puppy had an “accident,” and she could no longer care for her.

According to her, two weeks prior, the puppy had fallen off a bathroom vanity and partially dislocated her back leg. She claimed the dog was seen by a vet and treated with pain medication. Then, a few days before reaching out, the puppy fell again—this time off a tall bed—and stopped using her back leg altogether.

I agreed to meet her that evening. I asked for any paperwork she had, hoping to understand what I was stepping into. She arrived with the puppy in a stroller. When I picked her up and placed her gently on the ground, it was immediately clear something was very wrong—her back leg was completely unusable. Despite that, she was so sweet and trusting.

The woman wasn’t ready to let go just yet, so we agreed to meet again the next day, June 10th. She signed over ownership, and I took the puppy home. All I received was paperwork from a single vet visit dated back in January.

The following day, June 11th, I took her to my vet for a full evaluation. I told them everything I’d been told, handed over the limited paperwork, and waited. The staff called every nearby clinic and hospital looking for any record of treatment. Nothing existed. The previous owner had lied.

She hadn’t been vaccinated. She’d missed every booster. And worst of all—her leg wasn’t dislocated.

It was broken.

Badly.

The x-rays showed a serious fracture that had already begun to heal incorrectly. The vet estimated the injury had occurred 2–3 weeks prior. My heart broke. She had been living in pain for weeks—likely unable to sleep, play, or even rest comfortably. No one helped her.

Even the doctor was stunned.

To think that an 8-month-old puppy had endured this with no care—it’s beyond upsetting. This sweet girl has known more pain and neglect in her short life than most dogs do in a lifetime.

Because the injury was already healing, it wasn’t clear if the leg could even be saved. The x-rays were sent for consultation. I waited, terrified.

Finally, a small miracle: the specialists believe the leg can be repaired. With surgery, she has a strong chance at regaining full mobility and living a happy, pain-free life.

She’s scheduled for further x-rays on Monday, June 16th, to determine if she’ll need standard bone repair or a procedure called a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)—a surgery that removes part of the hip joint to relieve pain and restore mobility after serious injury.

And now, I’m doing everything I can to give her the life she deserves.

I didn’t plan for this—but I chose it the moment I picked her up. She deserves a safe, loving home. She deserves comfort. And she absolutely deserves a second chance.

The total cost of her care, including surgery and rehab, is expected to be between $3,000 and $7,000. If you feel moved to help in any way, it would mean the world—not just to me, but to her. Any funds raised beyond her needs will be donated to the SPCA to help other animals like her.

And if you're not in a position to donate, that's okay. Just reading and sharing this story helps raise awareness for animals living in pain, waiting for someone to care.
