JUSTICE FOR ABU

Hi, my name is Carmen Stephanie. As many of you may not know, and some of you do, my life has been completely turned upside down. It has now been nine long nights since my baby Abu was taken from me. Nine nights he has slept alone. Nine nights without my hugs, my kisses, and the love he is so used to.

The police removed Abu from my care because of a superficial bite that occurred when an officer approached us in the middle of the road to take a picture and got too close. I was initially told Abu would only need to complete a 10-day quarantine and that the Texas Humane Society would transfer him to a safe facility at no cost to me. I was reassured that as long as he showed no signs of rabies, I could bring him home. Unfortunately, that was not the truth.

After he was taken, I received a call from the police department stating Abu would actually be held for 30 days. I am now responsible for paying for extensive and unnecessary blood testing, along with the full cost of his quarantine at a rescue that specializes only in reptiles and native wildlife—not primates. To make matters worse, I have been told that I cannot get him back.

I have been in contact with Funky Monkey Ranch in Tarrant County, a licensed facility that specializes in primates. They have kindly offered to take Abu, provide him with the care and environment he needs, and even assume full ownership since I am no longer able to. Sadly, the police department has not made this process easy. They continue to hold Abu in a reptile facility—inside a Macaw bird cage, a completely unsuitable place for a primate.

I’m asking for everyone’s help to cover the attorney fees, vet bills, and whatever the reptile rescue is trying to charge me and also for the Funky Monkey Ranch so if/when he gets transferred over we have money to give to them to care for him.
