Update from Sarah & family 10/6:

We are still trying to raise money to get into a place. This has been a very long journey. As many of you know we've been fighting (with the help of a lawyer) to get our section 8 voucher back. Last week we got word that they will be reinstating it. Unfortunately we still have to wait while the lawyer and housing authority work out some kinks section 8 put in a stipulated agreement they want me to sign. It is getting very cold at night and even when we do get our voucher we still will have to come up with 1st, last, and deposit. If you are able to donate it would be so greatly appreciated, no donation is too big or too small. We love you all and are beyond grateful for all the love and support from everyone.

We are starting this fundraiser on behalf of our dear friends, who are facing heartbreaking circumstances after being wrongfully evicted through no fault of their own.

In early 2024, they completed their annual Section 8 housing review, as required. But after submitting everything, they never received any notice of changes—not from Section 8 and not from their apartment management. They assumed all was well. Unfortunately, several months later, as holidays approached and expenses piled up, they reached out to a local community connector to seek assistance. That’s when they were blindsided. Section 8 hadn’t paid their portion of the rent for nearly a year, and they suddenly learned they had accumulated an enormous balance—one they had no knowledge of and no way to pay.

Despite trying tirelessly to resolve the issue, their caseworker failed to provide the paperwork they needed to move out, and the family was hit with an eviction notice, for which they were never properly served. This illegal eviction not only cost them their home but also caused them to lose their Section 8 voucher entirely. They now have a lawyer and are fighting to have it restored, but legal battles take time—and their children need stability now.

For this past year, they've bounced between motels and friends' spare rooms, stretching every dollar until their savings have completely gone. Today, this family of five is living in a tent, struggling to provide safety and stability for their kids while keeping hope alive.

With summer coming to an end, the cold weather is right around the corner, and this living situation will become unsustainable fast.

This family has endured so much hardship that should never have happened. Sarah and Matthew are resilient, loving parents who just want to give their children a safe and stable home again. With your help, they can get out of survival mode and start rebuilding their lives.
