Starting late Thursday, early Friday, November 28-29, our dog, Max, inexplicably started having explosive diarrhea which has persisted to the time to posting this. We took him to the emergency vet on Friday afternoon to get support where he was prescribed antibiotics to help with the bad bacteria on his colon.
Along with the prescription medication and vet directed over-to-count metamucil dosages over the next almost 24 hours, Max’s waning interest in food and the increase in diarrhea—even with his decrease in food intake—has been incredibly concerning. So we took him to the emergency vet again (from where I am now writing this post). Bloodwork resulted in levels that are concerning and we were advised to hospitalize Max overnight so that he could get IV fluids and get ultrasound imaging tomorrow. All of which has an estimated cost of $4-$5K.
Due to high estimated cost for overnight care, the current plan of action is to give him subcutaneous fluids and continue prescribed and over-the-counter medication. That alone is going to cost an additional estimated $500. We are to return for imaging and additional bloodwork if, goodness forbid, he gets worse (which will cost an additional estimated $1,000).
Already this unexpected ordeal has cost us over $500. While we do have pet insurance that (I greatly hope!) should cover the cost of this and future treatments, it’s going to be difficult in the short term. If, goodness forbid, things worsen, it will be challenging to finance care. Because of that, I’m swallowing my pride and asking for help. For Max. To help with medical bills and comfort and care treatment.
