On Saturday morning, our beloved therapy dog Luna chased after a deer and disappeared. My partner and her uncle searched tirelessly while I stayed home, hoping she’d return. I posted about Luna all over the Quad Cities and beyond, called shelters, police stations, and city halls—anywhere that might help us find her. By noon, we sent out another search party and tracked her prints from our property, losing them near the Milan Bottoms by the Eagles’ roost. After hours of searching on foot and by car, we still hadn’t found her.

At 7pm, we received a heartbreaking call. Luna had been hit by a car, but a kind civilian stopped to help her, keeping her warm in the snow until the police arrived. We rushed Luna to the Animal Emergency Vet in Bettendorf, Iowa, where she was diagnosed with a pneumothorax, broken toes, a cut artery, and broken metacarpals in her back left leg that need to be fused. She’s been under close care at the vet to monitor her injuries and manage her pain until she can see an orthopedic specialist. Thankfully, her previous TPLO surgery from February is still in good shape, but she now faces another major surgery and a long road to recovery.

Luna is not just our pet—she’s a therapy dog who brings joy and comfort to many through her work and training with QCCAN. These funds will help us pay for her surgery and ongoing care until she’s back to her goofy, sweet self. Any extra funds will be donated to local shelters and rescues to help other animals in need.
