Hello, my name is Richard, I'm an actor in Berlin, and a while ago I started this campaign for Dannielle, a trans woman who fled Uganda, and a small LGBT community that is trying to survive in the Gorom camp in Sudan.

Dannielle and her community wrote the following text—they can do it better than I can.

"Hello dear friends and kind supporters,

We are a small group of LGBTQ refugees from East Africa — from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan — who came together while escaping persecution, violence, and rejection because of who we are and who we love.

Our journey began in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, where many of us first met and formed a community while trying to find safety. But life there became unbearable for LGBTQ people. We faced daily attacks, harassment, and threats. Some of us were beaten, our shelters burned, and we often went without food or protection.

As time went on, the Kenyan government made it even harder for LGBTQ refugees to live safely or receive protection. We were no longer welcomed, and support for LGBTQ people was pushed away. It became clear that we could not survive there, and many of us had to leave once again — even though we had nowhere safe to go.

Some of us managed to reach Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan, where we are now trying to rebuild our lives together. But even here, life remains very difficult. We have no proper shelter, not enough food, and we often sleep outside under the open sky.

Our situation worsened when USAID and other organizations stopped their assistance for LGBTQ refugees, leaving us with almost nothing. We now depend only on each other and on the kindness of strangers who care about humanity and equality.

Our group includes about 12 LGBTQ individuals — transgender women, gay men, and queer youth — who continue to stand together for love, peace, and survival. We are asking for your help to raise funds for:

• Safe shelter and protection for our group

• Food, clean water, and daily essentials

• Bedding, blankets, and clothing

• Medical and mental health support

• Communication costs to stay in touch with allies and support organizations

I am proud and happy to support my friends in the Gorom UN refugee camp in South Sudan, a group of LGBTQIA+ refugees facing poverty, discrimination, harassment and violence. I’ve gotten to know them through video calls and messages, and am in awe of all of their strength and bravery through incredibly difficult challenges. Months after we began speaking regularly, my friend Samalie was resettled as a refugee in Canada where she is finally safer, thriving, and has the opportunities she deserves to be happy and free."
