Restore Hope for Erica McDaniel After the Eaton Fire

On January 8, 2025, the devastating Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, California, destroying countless homes—including our niece Erica McDaniel's family home. This generational home, cherished since the 1960s, was more than just a structure—it was a symbol of love, history, and resilience, holding decades of memories passed down from her great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents.

Erica’s family’s journey in Altadena was not without its challenges. When they first moved to their street, they were the first Black family to do so. At the time, housing for Black families was severely restricted due to discriminatory practices like redlining and restrictive covenants. Despite facing significant resistance, the family was determined to claim their place in the neighborhood. They endured repeated intimidation, including trash being thrown on their yard multiple times, as neighbors sought to force them out. Their perseverance in the face of these challenges remains a testament to their strength and resilience.

Erica, a dedicated educator, has spent her career empowering and inspiring the next generation. She has always been a source of support and encouragement to her students and her community. Now, she faces the heartbreaking reality of starting over without the place that grounded her—a home filled with the legacy of those who came before her.
