A year of the crisis of COVID-19 has gone by and Rishi Valmiki Eco School was able to sail through with the generous support of numerous kind individuals who donated funds and helped us in various other ways.
Unfortunately, India is hit again by a second wave that’s more devastating, has claimed lives and hit the poor even harder. A third wave is impending. By no means education is a priority for most who are struggling to survive. But unless it is made a priority, we would weaken and destroy an entire future generation and times will be grimmer than they are today.
Rishi Valmiki Eco School is a school with 2 branches in the suburbs of Manori & Goregaon in Mumbai, India; with a mission to provide quality education and support the emotional development of children from weaker financial backgrounds through experiential and nature-based learning.
All our children come from a marginalised socioeconomic background and are first-generation learners. Most parents are daily wage earners such as auto-rickshaw drivers, vegetable vendors or house help. Over 300 families earn as low as 7,000/- to 10,000/- rupees per month in which on average a family of 4 to 7 has to survive. In the last academic year, 175 parents have lost their jobs, and only 98 students have been able to pay the subsidized 25% of the fees. 107 students have migrated to different places across the country because their families were unable to survive through the lockdowns. Due to our persistent efforts, currently, 481 students of 631 are attending online classes.
While we strive our best to provide education to all students whether or not they can pay any fees, it becomes impossible to bear the expenses most of which are our teacher’s salaries who also come from the same community and cannot survive with pay cuts. We see little hope that the situation will improve any sooner, and we are in dire need of funds to sustain the school and continue to provide quality education to our kids. It is only possible with financial support from donors to survive the COVID-19 crisis and thwart the possibility of shutting down if immediate steps are not taken. Otherwise, hundreds of children will suffer during this time of uncertainty and we fear many will simply discontinue taking education.

On average, each family had one android mobile and 2 or 3 children to learn using the same gadget, and to survive for a month in a limited data pack, It was a tough situation.
But yet we successfully taught through activity-based learning using not any fancy toys but anything available around our children. Each teacher changed her schedule to be available for every child anytime. With academics, we also focused on student's physical and emotional development by conducting various activities.
Only 98 students out of 631 have paid 25% subsidized fees yet we could be available for each child only because of the generous support we had from you all our SARATHIS.
