This Diwali brighten up the lives of over 700 underprivileged children by giving the gift of education to them.
Rishi Valmiki Eco School is a not-for-profit school with 2 branches in the suburbs of Manori & Goregaon in Mumbai, India; with a mission to provide quality education and support the emotional development of children from weaker financial backgrounds through experiential, remedial, and nature-based learning.
During the Covid19 catastrophe so many of you stood strong with us and which is how we could provide our children access to smartphones, internet, food and quality education to our children during the series of pandemic lockdowns. The number of students drastically dropped to 128 from 631 which we could gradually increase with constant persuasion to 481 in the first year and 593 in the second year of Covid19. It was possible only due to your support and our team’s dedicated efforts.
Finally the school has physically reopened and we have all our children back with addition of new babies making our total student strength 712.
The various repercussions of Covid19 can be seen on children’s learning. Our children are first generation learners and there is nearly zero learning environment at home. Online education can not be enough to cater to each kids’ need due to lack of one-to-one communication. According to baseline tests most of the children are not performing at their grade level. Before the pandemic, 22% of children were not performing according to grade, this number has increased to 57% this year. Lack of confidence and difficulty in interpersonal communication as well as emotional expression are other impacts of Covid19.
To solve it, this academic year we are focusing on remedial education to bring the kids gradually up to their grade level. Also co-curricular activities like singing, dancing, art classes, theatre, football have been introduced to make the kids express themselves and communicate freely.
In academics our focus is entirely on activity-based learning to strengthen the conceptual knowledge and the inclination to learn. When children love to learn their horizons expand beyond one’s imagination.
We need your support in this journey. We give education in subsidised fees. All our children come from a marginalised socioeconomic background. Most parents are daily wage earners such as auto-rickshaw drivers, vegetable vendors or domestic help. Over 300 families earn as low as 7,000/- to 10,000/- rupees per month in which on average a family of 4 to 7 has to survive. 50% of our funding comes from donations and only if we are able to fundraise, we’re able to continue with co-curricular activities, remedial education, and activity-based learning. Our deficit for the academic years 22-23 is INR 70 Lakh or approximately 85,000 USD.
While we strive our best to provide education to all students whether or not they can pay any fees, it becomes impossible to bear the expenses most of which is our teacher’s salaries who also come from the same community and cannot survive with pay cuts.
As a concerned citizen and a kind human being, you can make this decision right now and make a difference. We urge each of you to donate generously to our cause and uphold the right to education of hundreds of underprivileged children. Please also share this further and support this noble work.
Prayosha Foundation is supporting the education of girls in RVES and also supporting us to raise funds for our academic & co-curricular activities.
Your contributions are 100% tax-deductible as Prayosha Foundation Inc. been determined to be 501(3)(c) tax-exempt organization.
