Hurricane Melissa travelled through the Caribbean Sea, bringing flooding, landslides, and heavy storms to the surrounding region. Strengthening into a Category 5 while making landfall, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica’s southwestern coast Tuesday afternoon, local time. The extent of the destruction is still unknown, as Melissa makes her way across the country.

Our experienced GEM Caribbean team, based in Kingston, Jamaica, has begun prepositioning for assistance, while our GEM Headquarters is sending supplies into the area. GEM has already deployed a ship of supplies to Haiti, which will continue our prolonged support to the country. Additionally, a cargo plane of aid & containers of supplies has been mobilized to reach Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa passes. GEM has 2 large warehouses in Kingston, which are prepositioned to support the immediate & long-term recovery post-Melissa.
Our GEM Caribbean team has been working diligently since Hurricane Beryl’s landfall last year, performing over 730 roof repairs to damaged homes. Our local team has established critical partnerships with ODPEM, CDEMA, and other important organizations, which allow for our response to be immediate, impactful, and targeted.
