Hi,

My name is Lea and I live with my husband Maarten and our two kids in a yurt in Central Portugal.

Wednesday morning we got hit by storm Kristin, and it blew down everything. The winds were so strong that our yurt, in it's entirety, contents and all, was pushed into the rockwall behind it. The door ended up in the middle of the platform. We were able to get out just in time and sheltered in our car away from any big trees.

Once the sun came up we could see the true devastation. Our yurt, our home, torn apart. The roofs of our shed and kitchen blown away, our solar panels torn from the frame, tens if not hundreds of trees around us blown over, our whole life scattered on the hillside.

After an initial look at the yurt we think it's not damaged beyond repair, but we are still working on putting it back together. The top cover was completely torn apart. The rain cover is intact as far as we can see, but we need another cover to keep it truly weather proof. Some of the wood is broken, poles need to be replaced.

O meu nome é Lea e vivo com o meu marido, Maarten, e os nossos dois filhos numa iurta no centro de Portugal.

Na manhã de quarta-feira, fomos atingidos pela tempestade Kristin, que deitou tudo abaixo. Os ventos foram tão fortes que a nossa iurta, por inteiro, com tudo lá dentro, foi empurrada contra a parede de pedra que estava atrás dela. A porta acabou no meio da plataforma. Conseguimos sair a tempo e abrigamo-nos no nosso carro, longe de árvores de grande porte.

Quando o sol nasceu, pudemos ver a verdadeira devastação. A nossa iurta, a nossa casa, destruída. Os telhados do nosso barracão e da cozinha foram arrancados, os nossos painéis solares foram arrancados da estrutura, dezenas, talvez centenas, de árvores à nossa volta foram derrubadas, toda a nossa vida espalhada pela encosta.

Após uma avaliação inicial da iurta, acreditamos que os danos não são irreparáveis, mas ainda estamos a trabalhar para a reconstruir. A cobertura ficou completamente destruída. A cobertura de chuva parece intacta, mas precisamos de outra para garantir que é realmente à prova de intempéries. Algumas madeiras estão partidas e os postes precisam de ser substituídos.

Nos próximos dias, trabalharemos nos intervalos entre as chuvas para avaliar os danos e reconstruir a iurta. Temos um lugar para ficar entretanto, mas obviamente queremos voltar para casa o mais rapidamente possível. Tentarei mantê-los informados.

Mijn naam is Lea en ik woon met mijn man Maarten en onze twee kinderen in een yurt in Midden-Portugal.

Woensdagochtend werden we getroffen door storm Kristin, die alles omver blies. De wind was zo sterk dat onze yurt, inclusief alle spullen, tegen de rotswand erachter werd geduwd. De deur belandde midden op het platform. We konden er net op tijd uit en schuilden in onze auto, ver weg van de grote bomen.

Toen de zon opkwam, zagen we de ware omvang van de verwoesting. Onze yurt, ons huis, was volledig verwoest. De daken van ons schuurtje en onze keuken waren weggeblazen, onze zonnepanelen waren van het frame gerukt, tientallen, zo niet honderden bomen om ons heen waren omgewaaid, ons hele leven lag verspreid over de heuvel.

Na een eerste inspectie van de yurt denken we dat de schade niet onherstelbaar is, maar we zijn nog bezig om hem weer op te bouwen. Het bovenste doek is volledig kapotgescheurd. De regenhoes is, voor zover we kunnen zien, nog intact, maar we hebben een nieuwe hoes nodig om de yurt echt waterdicht te maken. Een deel van het hout is gebroken en een aantal palen moet vervangen worden.

Reparatie van het zonnepanelensysteem (ik heb geen idee of het nog werkt)

Vervanging van het dak van ons schuurtje

Een grotere kettingzaag om alle omgevallen bomen te zagen

En vooral: tijd. We zijn zelfstandig ondernemer, dus we hebben alleen inkomen als we werken. Uw steun betekent dat we ons kunnen concentreren op het weer opbouwen van ons leven voordat we weer aan het werk gaan.

De komende dagen werken we tussen de regenbuien door om de schade te beoordelen en de yurt weer op te bouwen. We hebben op dit moment een tijdelijk onderkomen, maar willen natuurlijk zo snel mogelijk terug naar huis. Ik zal proberen u op de hoogte te houden.
