From Louanne’s daughter Amy-
On February 10, 2022 we took my Mom, Louann to the ER because she was having difficulty breathing and her heart rate was erratic. A month before she had tested positive for Covid 19 and had been ill ever since. Within a few hours she had been diagnosed with Covid pneumonia and was being admitted. Due to hospital visitor restrictions my Dad and I went home because we couldn’t stay the night. In half an hour the doctor called and said that radiology had reviewed her scans and they had found a grapefruit sized cancerous mass in her lung. They also determined that she needed an emergency procedure to drain the fluid from her heart or she would die. Already worried when we thought she had pneumonia, we were panicked and worried about her being alone, but had to wait until the following morning for visiting hours.
One of the first things she said to me that morning was that she wouldn’t do treatment because of the cost. She didn’t want to burden our family with the expense. Unfortunately my Mom fell into the Obamacare gap, where she’s retired but not eligible for Medicare. Living on a fixed income and her monthly premium being $2000 with a $15000 deductible was not affordable for her (or anyone for that matter). We had tried catastrophic coverage too, but it was very expensive, didn’t meet the requirements to get a tax break, and eventually they dropped coverage.
She spent her first 4 days in the hospital
in ICU and 6 more days after that. After testing she was diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 Small cell lung carcinoma. The doctors informed us that no treatment would mean she would feel just as miserable as she had been feeling, and not for very long. She decided to do chemo. Despite being tired, she says she’s feeling better than she has in a long time. We are so grateful to have this time with her. For her to be able to talk to us and make more memories. She’s a warrior and heart of our family.
Louann and Butch have always been the type of people to help anyone who needs it. They are doing everything they can to cover Louann’s medical expenses. But with a 10 day hospital stay and ongoing treatment, the medical bills are overwhelming. Just relieving a little of that burden would mean so much. And please keep praying for her.
