Documentary about sharks and finning in Europe

Donation protected
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen

My name is Pav Sinitsin and I’m a photographer and filmmaker from Germany currently living in Valencia, Spain.

I am sending you this message for the following cause:

Every year around 73 million sharks die solely for their fins, which are considered to be a highly desirable ingredient in shark fin soup. This way of fishing is also known as ``Finning``.

The exact numbers remain speculative and could be much higher as there is a lack of reliable data and the worldwide number of unreported cases of illegal fishing is extremely high.

As a result of this massive overexploitation, the marine ecosystem is in danger, since sharks create a state of balance  through their role as top predators.

The Organisation, STOP FINNING` is working hard to tackle this problem. And I want to help them to reach the goal of banning the Fin Trade in Europe, by making a short documentary about the problem we call ‘’Finning’’. I added a link to the bottom of this letter for more information and the petition.

Finning is a brutal practice used in fishing on the high seas. Sometimes the sharks are hunted selectively, but increasingly Finning is being practiced with the “unwanted by-catch” of tuna and swordfish fishing. Immediately after catching the sharks all the fins are cut off and the remaining carcasses thrown back into the sea. During this mutilation, the animals are usually fully conscious and  no longer able to swim which makes them sink to the seabed where they bleed to death or suffocate.

Spain and Italy are among the European countries with the largest shark meat market, consuming on average 40,000 tons (Spain) and 10,000 tons (Italy) of shark meat per year.

In order to ban the trade of fins in the European Union a total of at least one million signatures must be collected, and the minimum number of signatures must be reached in at least a quarter of the EU states, currently seven EU states.

Because this is a problem that I want to help tackling, I want to bring in my skillset in diving and videography to make a short documentary about this horrible and crucial topic. I think it is important to raise awareness about this.

Due to the current pandemic it is difficult to reach people at festivals, concerts, high streets and other events for the collection of the needed signatures. The only way of making enough people aware of this important cause is by showing them visually what is happening.

I will make this whole documentary completely for free as it means a lot to me too.

As I am currently living in Spain I have direct access to the source of problems and could film a documentary here to raise more awareness.

However with this project there will be funds and sponsors required.

I am reaching out to global brands who can help us with this project as well as making this fundraiser.

The money raised will mainly go towards special gear and Equipment needed to make this documentary. I have a lot of my own resources in terms of equipment but just not enough to realize this project. The smallest amount of the raised money will also go towards travel expenses .

Every little help is crucial for this documentary to be realized. If you can help with any donation possible, you would bring us a step closer to make a change and raise awareness.

Every person helping out will be mentioned in the documentary which has a high potential of going viral worldwide.

So please if you would like to be mentioned in the documentary leave your full name.

It would be great to count on your help with this project.

Let’s tackle this problem together because by myself I will not be able to do it.

Best regards

Pav
