BHS Jacket Spring Fundraising Drive
Donation protected
The Jacket is a 100% student produced newspaper serving the Berkeley Community and Berkeley High School. As the faculty adviser, I troubleshoot, answer questions, and give support. All of the stories, the fundraising, the printing, the distribution, the ad sales, the layout, the editing, the editorializing, and the organizing is done by the students, for the students of Berkeley High School. Your contribution lets the students continue to report on our community. It costs about $1,000 each issue for printing and mailing, and so if we meet our goal, we'll be well on our way to getting through the rest of this school year. I know many of you viewing this have already contributed a lot in time and money, but fundraising is a constant need for the paper to continue. But don't take it from me, here's Nina Price, our 2017-18 editor-in-chief:
The Berkeley High Jacket Newspaper is an integral component of Berkeley High, with a staff of over 120 students. We are proud to produce a newspaper every two weeks, managed almost entirely by students with the guidance of our faculty adviser, Peter Rodrigues. Each issue has 16 pages of articles that cover news from Berkeley High and the city, opinion pieces which both challenge and affirm school-wide beliefs, and features of the clubs, activism, athletics, and countless other notable actions which are woven throughout the BHS student body. Our work as student journalists is challenging, but the Jacket serves an irreplaceable role as a source for coverage on our community.
Recently, the Jacket was awarded a crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the 2016-17 school year, which is the highest honor for high school newspapers. Every year, we work towards improving the journalistic quality of the Jacket through more diligent teaching and more extensive outreach. For the last two years, we have strived to incorporate the voices of all students of Berkeley High through submissions in special issues which celebrate of Black History Month and Chicano Latino History Month, and which capture the passion of students around issues such as DACA and, soon, gun control. These special issues, as well as our tireless outreach to every corner of the student body, are part of our commitment to the Jacket’s guiding principle: we are newspaper “published by and for the students of Berkeley High.”
I hope that you will support us in our mission to serve Berkeley High and its larger community through the production of the Jacket. Our work is expensive, and any support from our readers, friends, and family are vital in allowing us to continue production. All donations will go toward the costs of printing the paper, which is distributed throughout the school and mailed to our 200 subscribers.
Thank you for your support!
Nina Price
Your contribution will go to my bank account, and I'll write a check for the total raised to the Jacket. I'm happy to post the cleared check if that would make people feel more confident in donating.
Thanks Again,
Peter Rodrigues
