Hello! My name is Bethany, and I'm a linguist from the U.S. working in Colombia for the past four years with Mission South America. I have done linguistic research on an indigenous language here in Colombia and for the past 2 years I have been in our School of Missions teaching basic linguistics classes and serving on staff.
As you can hear in the video above, there is currently a great need for translators and consultants for Old Testament translation projects into minority languages. Since it's something I am passionate about, I want to be trained to help meet that need.
Of course, in order to be qualified to serve in this capacity, I will need to go deep in the original language, culture and context, and that's what this campaign is all about!
I am headed to Israel in January 2017 to study at the Jerusalem Center for Bible Translation for 6 months of intensive Biblical Hebrew and cultural background of the OT.
The finances:
For these past 4 years I have been living and traveling on a fluctuating $500-$1200 monthly income, made up of support from friends who believe in my ministry in Colombia. My visa in Colombia is on a strictly volunteer basis which doesn't allow me to get a job. I have some very small savings but not enough to begin to cover the cost of this program.
The program costs $8300, I estimate $1300 for airfare, $1200 for taxes (I expect it will actually be higher) and $1200 for tithe: 8300+1300+1200+1200 = $12,000.
I need these funds by the end of the year 2016 in order to start the program in January 2017.

Cordiales saludos! Mi nombre es Bethany y soy lingüista de los EEUU. Por los últimos 4 años he trabajado en Colombia con Misión Suramérica. He hecho investigación lingüística sobre un idioma indígena de Colombia y por los últimos 2 años he estado en nuestra Escuela de Misiones enseñando clases de lingüística y sirviendo como líder.
Como puedes ver en el vídeo, actualmente hay una gran necesidad de traductores y consultores para proyectos de traducción del Antiguo Testamento a lenguas minoritarias. Esto es algo que me apasiona y quiero ser capacitada para ser parte de suplir esta necesidad.
Por supuesto, para poder servir en esta capacidad, voy a necesitar profundizarme en el idioma original, la cultura y el contexto del Antiguo Testamento, y de eso se trata esta campaña!
Voy a Israel en enero del 2017 para estudiar en el Centro de Traducción Bíblica de Jerusalén para 6 meses de hebreo bíblico intensivo y el fondo cultural del AT.
Las finanzas:
En estos 4 años en Colombia, he estado viviendo y viajando con un ingreso mensual fluctuante de entre $500 y $1200 USD, compuesto de apoyo de amigos que creen en mi ministerio en Colombia. Mi visa colombiana es estríctamente voluntario, lo cuál no me permite trabajar. Tengo unos ahorros chiquitos pero no son suficiente para empezar a cubrir el costo de este programa.
El programa cuesta $8300, con aproximadamente $1300 en tiquetes aéreos, $1200 de impuestos (creo que será más en realidad) y $1200 en diezmos.
8500+1300+1200+1200 = $12,000.
Necesito estos fondos para el final del año 2016 para empezar el programa en enero 2017.
Si te apasiona ver la Palabra accesible para que personas de toda lengua la puedan entender, por favor considera si me puedes apoyar en este próximo paso en el camino de mi llamado como lingüista.
