AIDS orphanage for new born babies

Doação protegida
Hi there my name is Ashleigh Robinson and I live in Adelaide, South Australia.

I am raising funds for an infants Aids orphanage in Kenya. 2012 was my first trip to Kenya and have since returned to continue my projects at the orphanage. By establishing a campaign here in Australia as well as continuting to grow my non-for profit organisation, I am able to fund further projects and continue to grow awareness of the sickness and poverty in Kenya.

My journey in Kenya began  in April 2012, my first day at the infants orphanage, a new born baby came in 1 day old 7 weeks premature, whose mother had sadly passed away during child birth and her father had sadly passed away a few months prior. The baby was also bought in with her twin brother Philip who sadly passed away that morning with a twisted intestine. We named her Felistas Ashleigh Apiyo, Felistas meaning blessed and lucky in Latin. I thought this was well suited as it was a miracle she survived at weeks 8 premature without an incubator. From a day old I took a particular interest in her and after a few days couldn’t separate myself. I bathed, changed, and fed her every day for 3 months and would regulary take her back to the village I was staying in. While in Kenya I also started a bank account for Felistas and transfer 50 dollars every week for schooling and general living expenses that only I have access to until she is 16 and is allowed to have access to the account. The average kenyan wage is about $40.00 per month so as you can imagine even $5 goes along way! Felistas along with so many other babies in the orphanage dont have any families and rely purely on the orphange to raise them and supply them with food, water, a bed to sleep in and medical care.

There are so many beautiful babies in the Rangala orphanage suffering from the AIDS virus or other serious illness, including hepatitis B, meningitis and malaria. Your generous donations will go towards restoring the orphanage to a state where the babies can receive the medical attention and health care that they need,  aswell as providing food, clothing, and bedding as these are things the orphanage is constantly in desperate need of.

Projects that established in my previous visits to Kenya include:

-Educating the Kenyan staff in the orphanage on looking after the babies and providing specilist care for babies that suffered permenant brain damage during birth due to mis-use of the delivery forceps or complications during birth and therefore are permanently paralysed.

-Purhcasing and installing fans (Kenya is on the equator and therefore gets extreamly hot!) And being that most of these babies suffer from sickness, they often have high temperatures and are very uncomfortable.

-Supplying the babies with new bibs, re-usable nappies, Advent bottles, clothing, sheets and pillows.

-Supplying the babies with a years worth of powdered milk formula.

-Supplying the toddlers with educational toys and books.

For my next trip to Kenya I am also completely open to any specific requests as to how you would like your donation to make a difference and what area within the orphanage you would like your donation to go towards.

My mission statement:

'All people have the right to a meaningful, healthy, happy life – regardless of where in the world they are born. We are all equal and as one. Some us are fortunate to live in countries with an abundancy of fresh food and water, health and education systems and government support, some of us are not. This is the case for so many people living in third world countries, such as Kenya, Africa.

Kenyan Orphan Aid is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the lives of orphaned and sick children in Kenya. We want to be the connection between those who want to make a difference and those who need the help and assistance. We aim to encourage and inspire people in our own communities to get involved in supporting our projects including supplying food, sanitation and medicine as well as education on environmental sustainability and social development.

Many Aid organisations, even with good intentions, distribute money into these African villages in need of assistance but very often this money isn’t handled properly and is often used up very quickly, therefore only a temporary fix. Many of these villages in African countries have lived for 100’s of years and followed traditions and customs of their ancestors. They are often not educated or familiar with the technology we have in the western world. Our mission is to provide help and assistance to these people by listening to what the people in these communities and villages need as opposed to just assuming that our ideas are beneficial to them and trying to make them live, learn and function like we do. In the short term large amounts of money may be beneficial, for example supplying the villages with lots of food but in the long term this doesn’t serve a purpose as eventually food runs out! A more sustainable approach is to educate the people in the villages on growing the food or supplying them with equipment to assist them in keeping their farms, crops and livestock sustained. Our mission is to visit the villages, schools, or community projects and look at what is needed in each village and how we can best support them.

As an organisation, we will continue to support people in need in Kenya and would love for people to join us on our mission to inspire and provide aid to people in need.'
