$15 towards food for Orangutans & Sunbears BOSF

With the help from Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation this page has been created as a way for volunteers and anyone else willing to help to easily give a small contribution to feed both Orangutans and Sun bears at both Samboja Lestari and Nyaru Menteng during this difficult time.
Aim
A small contribution from each past volunteer and /or friends and family of $15 could feed 8 animals for 1 day.
The aim is to raise approximately $6900 which is the equivalent number of volunteers easily reached by this campaign. A $15 donation would go towards fruit, vegetables, milk, enrichment and vitamins. By all giving $15 each, this will feed all 436 animals at both centers for 2 weeks, this may not sound like a long time but with continued donations from other donors as well this will go a long way to helping the animals.
With no volunteers right now, all normal funding that comes from this avenue is gone, as is the man power to support the team on the ground. We cannot be present physically but we can still try and raise some funds to help the charity that is still on the ground trying it’s hardest to take care of the animals.
This campaign was set up by Jenny Wiltshire, with content given from Kate Helliwell and the team at Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.
All funds will be sent directly to Bos Foundation in Indonesia once withdrawn and Kate Helliwell will cover any transaction fees made by the website to make sure all the donations you give go directly to the animals.

Background
BOS Foundation is dedicated to the protection of the Bornean orangutan and its habitat, but as a non-profit organisation, they rely heavily on donations from kind hearted supporters. With the threat of COVID-19 on our doorstep, most of the volunteer, visitor, and fundraising activities have been indefinitely suspended, halting major revenue streams and jeopardising the continuation of their operational activities. At the same time, their rehabilitation centres are experiencing an increase in needs, but the panic buying phenomenon has created scarcity and drastic price changes for vital goods that are basic animal care necessities (e.g. fruits, vegetables, and milk). The already high operational costs required for caring for the 436 orangutans have drastically surged, coupled with supply chain interruptions and economic recession. Personnel shortages are placing pressure on the remaining 400 employees who manage 3 orangutan release sites within protected forest areas, run 2 large-scale habitat planting projects, and operate 2 orangutan rehabilitation centres.
The team is committed to ensuring that every orangutan in their care receives the best protection possible from COVID-19. The daily provisioning of nutritious fruits, vegetables, and other diet items is vital in keeping them healthy. The BOS Foundation works together with local farmers who help to provide food for the orangutans. In a month, the orangutans can consume up to 50,000 kilograms of fruit and vegetables and hundreds of litres of milk. With Indonesia’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 rising steadily and the implementation of large-scale social restrictions, local farmers are experiencing logistical challenges that hinder the supply of food for our orangutans.
They are watching as the price of food climbs, but they fear this is only the beginning. Bos Foundation’s funding needs for this financial year are expected to continue to grow, while most of their fundraising events and activities are on hold.

As the number of confirmed cases steadily rose in Indonesia and the COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread unpredictably, on 17 March 2020, the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation temporarily closed offices, the information centre at the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Central Kalimantan to visitors, and the Samboja Lodge at the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in East Kalimantan to visitors and volunteers. Additionally, the release and research sites, including the camps in the Bukit Batikap Protection Forest, Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, Kehje Sewen Forest, and the Tuanan Research Area stopped the intake of new volunteers and researchers.
As one of our closest living relatives, orangutans share 97% of our DNA and are susceptible to many of the same viruses as humans. It is expected that they are at great risk of contracting COVID-19 and so BOS Foundation have acted swiftly to ensure that their staff and orangutans remain safe. But they and the resident sun bears still need your help.
