Eimear Browne is hoping to fulfil a childhood/ lifelong dream of riding in a horse race at the Curragh! The Pat Smullen Charity Race takes place on August 29th 2026, in memory of Pat Smullen , 9 time Irish champion flat jockey, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2020.

To take part in the charity race, Eimear needs to raise at least 3,000euro for Cancer Trials Ireland , a charity that is dedicated to maximising cancer trials access and outcomes, prolongs patient lives and expands cancer research in Ireland.

To raise these funds, Eimear, now a mother of 4, plans to do a 'Dip a Day' for the month of March in her local lake, Cavetown Lake, Co.Roscommon, and other dipping locations, as her daily schedule will vary throughout March.

Tony Boyle died in August of 2025 from a very short, very hard fought battle with glioblastoma multiforme. He was the epitome of looking after people. Raheens GAA/LGFA Club, Caragh, Co. Kildare, will host the St. Stephen’s Day Charity Blitz in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland.

This year has been incredibly tough for everyone at Raheens, as we mourn the loss of a number of people who made significant contributions to the club.

This is a cause close to the hearts of everyone in the club, so all donations are greatly appreciated. We are hoping to raise much needed funds on the lead up to the event and on the day, to support this great cause.

At the end of August, I’ll be taking part in the Pat Smullen Charity Race, an incredible event supporting cancer research and care. This race holds a special place in my heart, having lost my mum to cancer almost two years ago.

I’ve been fortunate to ride out for some amazing trainers around the world, and for the past five years I’ve been based with Jessica Harrington while completing my marketing degree. Horses have always been a huge part of my life, and taking part in this race is a way to give back through the sport I love, and to honour those, like my mum, who’ve been affected by cancer.

It’s been 32 years since I last rode on a racecourse but this year, I’m returning to the saddle for something far more meaningful than a trophy.

When my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in March, it became my driving force to take on this incredible challenge. My riding career simply wouldn’t have existed without him — not only is he a true legend as a jockey, trainer and breeder, he also guided me and so many others in their careers. He was my foundation, my mentor, and my biggest supporter.

This race is deeply personal — it’s in honour of my dad, and in memory of my dear friend Pat Smullen, whose courage continues to inspire me.

On 30th August I will ride in the Pat Smullen Charity Race at the Curragh. I decided that I wanted to ride in the race in January. The week that the Curragh asked for expressions of interest for the race, I found out that my cousin Catherine Kelly (Catherine Feeney for those of us who know her from before she was married) had been diagnosed with Cancer. Catherine and myself are the same age and have always been very close. So I wanted to ride in the race to support her.

Although I did a small amount of horse riding in my early/mid twenties, it’s about 15 years since I’ve been on a horse. And I never rode thoroughbreds or racehorses. I have been training since the beginning of March with jockey coach Paddy Flood in RACE. Paddy has been brilliant and in less than 3 months I have gone from not being on a racehorse before to passing the assessment to ride in the race.

I will continue to train with Paddy until the race and now I am riding out with Harty Racing 3/4 days a week. A huge thanks to Eddie and Patrick Harty for allowing me to train with them for the race. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible. Their staff have been very helpful and patient on my journey and all in Harty Racing are excited about me riding in the race.

The Pat Smullen Charity Race is run in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland. The Curragh have raised €840k in total from previous years and they hope to break through the €1 million total raised this year. I want to play as big a part in this as I can. Cancer Trials Ireland plays a very important part in trying to find cures for Cancer. Any donation you can make is appreciated.

As a former professional jockey, I’ve spent years chasing the finish line—but this time, the stakes are higher. I’m coming out of retirement to ride in a charity race, not for trophies or titles, but to raise vital funds for cancer trials that could save lives.

Cancer has touched too many of us, and the need for breakthrough research has never been more urgent. Every stride I take in this race is for the fighters, the survivors, and the loved ones we’ve lost. I’m proud to pull on my boots again to support pioneering trials that give real hope to real people.

Greetings, my name is Ben Cusack, and I will be participating in The Pat Smullen Charity Race on the 30th of August at the Curragh in support of Cancer Trials Ireland. This charity holds great significance for us all, as we each have friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances affected by cancer.

During my first college year in Maynooth, I was fortunate to begin part-time work with Moyglare Stud alongside my studies. The team have went above and beyond to help me in every possible way. It was not long before I realized the profound impact Pat had on everyone around him, especially in the stud. He remains an inspiration for those following in his footsteps, leaving behind a legacy of immense value.

In recent years, family friends have faced unexpected diagnoses, including one individual who saved my father’s life. It is my sincere intention to raise as much as possible to give back to those who have sacrificed so much to aid others on their journey, particularly those suffering in silence.

Every donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference. Your contributions will directly support the development of new treatments and trials. Together, we can restore hope to those affected by cancer.

Hello, my name is Sam Austin and on the 30th of August I will be taking part in the Pat Smullen Charity Race in support of Cancer Trials Ireland, a charity doing fantastic work to improve access to cancer trials with the goal of prolonging patients lives, and further development of cancer research in Ireland. To date this has seen in excess of 17,000 patients accrued.

Through my time working with horses, I have seen the incredible impact that Pat Smullen had on everyone who knew him and how he was highly regarded amongst people across the racing world.

Unfortunately we all know people affected by cancer and I have been no different, having seen the effects it causes first hand to both friends and family, including my grandparents. This is why I intend to raise funds in order to support the work this charity carries-out.

Every donation, regardless of size, will be sincerely appreciated and will directly supports the development of new treatments and trials. With your help we can aim to lessen the effects of cancer.
