SO since Afflicted came out and pretty much destroyed any hopes of MECFS advocacy I had planned to use it for, I’ve been looking for ways to make up for it, ways to right that wrong...

I have a crazy idea that might help raise awareness for ME/CFS and other chronic illnesses.

I was listening to the latest episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. He has had an ongoing joke about selling $2,000 coffee mugs on his online store, but someone actually bought one the other day. So he called the person and recorded it for the podcast. He asked which charity the person wanted the money donated to and they spent a few minutes talking about a homeless shelter. It was really cool.

My idea is to try to replicate that exposure for MECFS. It might sound far-fetched, but Dax has millions of listeners and he said he would do the same thing for anyone who bought a mug. So I think this is a great opportunity to turn $2,000 into much, much more in donations to an MECFS charity. At the very least I’m sure he would just donate the $2,000 to an ME charity and we’d essentially break even. So please consider donating to help us buy this mug ... also it will have been used by him or another celebrity on his show, which is either really cool or incredibly disgusting, I’m not sure which.

Hey friends! As some of you may know I had this crazy idea to buy a $2,000 mug and get on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast to raise awareness for MECFS and Lyme, and get people to donate to Open Medicine Foundation. Well, thanks to YOU lovely folks, we raised the money and bought the mug, and I had a nice chat with Dax.

The latter is a long story that I’ll explain in an upcoming blog post, but for now, please check out my chat with Dax in the latest episode ft. Sam Harris. You can download it for free on iTunes or any podcast app.

(Side note: I know Sam Harris is sort of controversial, but I actually think it’s an interesting coincidence that we were on the same episode because his mom had CFS and was the creator of Golden Girls, which had that famous episode covering the disease.)

You can find my conversation starting at 1:55:00. It’s sort of crammed in towards the end, but it’s there!

Hopefully Open Medicine Foundation gets some donations! Thank you to everyone who pitched in!

Hello Everyone,

Quick update: Thanks to each of you and a recent private donor I was able to buy the mug (see photo). It’s nice but seems a little overpriced haha. I’ve sent a follow-up email to the AE podcast staff to see what the next step is. Now we wait for a reply. I’ll keep you updated. Thanks again for contributing! Hopefully this helps raise awareness for MECFS to a new audience.
