In a matter of moments, their home, all their belongings, their beloved pet, and many other homes in their neighborhood, were taken by the flames, leaving them in shock and heartbroken. In an instant the world seemed to turn upside down, and now her loved ones are reaching out to her wider community asking for support as they navigate the unimaginable.

<p>Haven Watch began by showing up at the gate. When people were being released from ICE detention in Minnesota with nothing and no one waiting for them, our volunteers were there in orange vests, in the cold, making sure no one walked out alone.

<p>That commitment has not changed. Our work, however, has grown far beyond the gate.

<p>Today, Haven Watch provides ongoing care and support to immigrants and families across Minnesota impacted by ICE operations. We serve people at every stage of this crisis, from those living under the threat of enforcement, to families torn apart by detention and deportation, to communities trying to rebuild. The trauma does not end when someone is released. It follows families home, where they face lost income, housing instability, urgent legal needs, and a road back that feels impossible.

Haven Watch MN – Support at the gate, care beyond it

<div>The Sayed Zada family, who narrowly escaped Afghanistan in 2021, needs our help to secure housing by March 1. Their landlord is selling the home they have rented since 2021. This fundraising goal would help them secure a new home for their family in our neighborhood so that their kids do not have to change schools again. With 4 kids at Duniway and 1 at Sellwood Middle School, many of you are likely to know at least one member of the Sayed Zada family. For those who don't, please read on to learn more about their story:

<div>Jawed grew up in Afghanistan. He was the oldest boy in a family of 5 daughters and 5 sons. When he was very young, the Taliban tried to extort his father who refused to give them money he didn't have and so his father was shot in front of him and died the next day at the hospital. From that point on, Jawed became the provider for the family despite his young age. Through years of hard work, he was able to provide an education for his brothers and sisters. He had a successful business and worked as a cook for the United States Army and NATO during the war with Afghanistan. During this time, Jawed owned a large house that was home to his wife and their growing family, his mother, and his sister's family. They were a happy and thriving family with so much love, so much community, and so much hope.
</div>

<div>When the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, Jawed faced the terrible truth that he had to leave his life behind. He'd already lost his father to the Taliban and he knew how bad things could get. Because he'd worked for the US Army and for NATO, he and his family qualified for a special visa that allowed them to come to the United States as part of Operation Allies Welcome. But we all know there weren't nearly enough flights out and the Taliban were already in Kabul. He and his wife and their six children spent seven hellish days trying to reach the airport gates. One day Jawed finally made his way to the gates and in the sea of other people was able to hold up his Operation Allies Welcome paperwork and a solider waved him through but they still needed to make their way back through the crowd for Jawed's wife and children which the soldiers helped him do. They were bruised and traumatized and their journey was far from over, but they made it.

<div>Once they were in Portland, OR a few months later, they had the amazing luck of being connected with a generous landlord who made a five bedroom rental home available for well below market rates.  This brought them into our community and when Jawed's eldest daughter, Sahar, joined Annabelle's fifth grade class they became fast friends. Jawed was able to pay rent from his income as a cook at Dar Saalam in downtown Portland. Now, however, their landlord must sell the home and has asked the family to leave by March 1st.
</div>

<div>The kids have all begged Jawed to find a home in this neighborhood so they do not need to leave their teachers, who they love, or their new friendships, but there are no homes in this neighborhood--or most neighborhoods--that wouldn't require more than 100% of Jawed's income. He has applied for Section 8 housing and has been accepted but there is nothing available except apartments in remote neighborhoods too far from their current schools.

<div>If we reach the fundraising goal, we can make up the difference between what they can afford and the cost of a 3 or 4 bedroom rental home for 2 full years--which should allow us time to work on long-term solutions. (while they are in a five bedroom house now, we think downsizing will likely be required given that there are only a handful of 4+ bedroom houses available for rent.

<div>Someday Jawed, like all of us, hopes to have a permanent home for his family and he's working so hard toward it but right now he and his family need our help. Today he's a cook at <a href="https://www.shandiznow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shandiz</a> in Lake Oswego which allows him to be close to home and the kids' school if needed, he's taking ESL classes at PCC, and he's hoping that he can work toward a nursing degree next.

Duniway & Sellwood Family from Afghanistan

<div>Hello everyone! I am putting this GoFundMe request together on the behalf of the McGrath Family , (Gavin, Caroline, Deegan 10, Paxton 7). On Saturday their family got hit with a terrible tragedy. Because of the ice storm and crazy winds affecting our neighborhood 2 VERY LARGE trees came crashing onto their home. Thankfully no one was hurt but all of their items have been destroyed; from furniture, to clothing, to keepsakes it is either smashed or covered in asbestos/insulation/water damage. They now not only have to find a new place to live but they also have to rebuild their lives from the ground up. If you can spare anything to help them rebuild it would go such a long way!

Help McGrath family recover from destroyed home

<div>My name is Zsuzsa Gyenes and 3 weeks ago, Friday Feb 3rd, around 9pm my 9yr old son and I were painting his Minecraft Valentine’s Day box in our living room when a train carrying toxic and highly carcinogenic chemicals explosively derailed about a mile from our home. It immediately burst into flames hundreds of ft tall, massive plumes of black choking smoke, and consequently began spewing over a million lbs of lethal gases and liquids right on top of our little town of only 4,700. We followed local authorities orders to shelter in place but we began smelling the noxious gases in our home around 3am. This caused my son and I both to become violently ill forcing us to quickly evacuate. The situation took an even darker turn a few days later when one of the hazmat tankers destabilized leading to a massive intentional burn controlled by local government. The plume was seen on satellite radar and has become infamous for its resemblance to a mushroom cloud bomb. Shockingly, the evacuation order was lifted only two days later and trains ran through the newly built tracks within 3 minutes. Despite our air testing safe by the railroads team, my home still has an overwhelming smell of chemicals and continues to make me terribly sick every time I try to return home. The railroad will not provide assistance after their test says the air is ok, even if you are getting sick with chemical exposure symptoms. Many residents are having this same issue. At the time of evacuation we weren’t informed the train was burning hazardous materials but poison control said my son and I likely had an allergic reaction to an irritant, such as the ones released by the train. My family and I have been living in a hotel with our two cats for over three weeks now and it is clearly not ideal nor financially feasible to continue. As a mother, I cannot morally bring my immune compromised son back to a home I know has been bombarded by some of the most deadly chemicals known to man, particularly dioxins which they are not yet testing for. Back to a home that I can’t physically be in myself. I recently broke my leg so I have been out of work already for two months. I hope our town finds the answers and solutions that we so very much deserve but until then I’m kindly and also desperately asking for support in relocating my family to a new safer home and in replacing our belongings lost to chemical contaminants. <div>Brandi is an incredible person who has always put others before herself.  She has been a Pediatric nurse for 11 years and provided care to innumerable cancer patients during her time here.  Now it's our opportunity to step up and help her.  In December of 2020 Brandi was diagnosed with stomach cancer.  She underwent extensive surgeries followed by chemo.  For a short time she was in remission but unfortunately it was recently discovered her cancer has returned and spread.  Brandi has been told there is no cure at this point, only palliative options to try and extend the time she has left.  Brandi continues to fight, all the while trying to maintain her full time Pediatric nursing job in order to be able to pay house and medical expenses.  We would love to be able to help alleviate some of her stress by providing financial support so she can focus on what's most important, spending time with her 4 children, ages 14 (twins), 17, and 20. On the evening of March 6, after spending the evening celebrating and singing at a birthday party with friends from their homeschool community, the three lovely ladies in this picture were struck head-on by an oncoming truck.  <br /><br />Melodi and Abi did not survive the accident.  Shiloh was transported to Kalispell hospital and is recovering from a severely broken arm.<br /><br />Anyone who knew Melodi will tell you her joy and kindness is what they remember.  We in the homeschool group lovingly referred to her as our "happy hippy", and I think she completely related to that.  She had the most generous soul, beautiful smile and welcoming heart.  Her loss is felt by all who knew her, but most deeply by the family she leaves behind - Jeremy, Shiloh, Brisa and Luna, as well as their loving extended family.  <br /><br />Abi was an incredible soul. She was wise beyond her years, and when you met her, you could see her standing back and processing everything before she engaged.  She was amazingly smart and incredibly gifted - in her Challenge B class, she took on the role of teaching her classmates the really tough concepts at their study groups.  She just got it, and she was gifted enough at her age to be able to teach it, which is an amazing thing.  <br /><br />Abi was also gifted musically, as her mom and sisters were.  Those who loved them loved seeing them gather together, singing and playing, usually songs of their own creation.<br /><br />This world, this community and this family have lost some beautiful shining lights on this earth, but we take comfort in knowing they are now in the arms of Jesus.  With an eternal perspective, we know this is not good-bye, but rather, "I'll see you later."  <br /><br />In the meantime, however, moving forward is hard, and we, the directors of the homeschool community they were a part of, want to coordinate to help take some of the financial burden off this family's shoulders, to help lighten the load.  With planning, unexpectedly, for two funerals as well as medical costs, please, if you feel led, contribute anything you can. Anything above these costs will help with tuition for the girls for the coming year.  And, if you cannot contribute financially, your prayers are deeply appreciated.  Thank you for helping us surround this family with love and prayers.

Oregon Fire Leaves Local Man With Charcoal

<p>#BlackLivesMatter #WeDoHeal<br /><br />In the wake of George Floyd's murder is a long, painful month that’s an extension of a year that’s challenged us to our core.<br /><br />We need healing. We need justice. And that requires action.<br /><br />Systemic change requires prolonged effort, but we can also make an immediate difference for frontline communities. <br /><br />The Black Resilience Fund was launched on June 1st, 2020 to foster healing and resilience by providing immediate financial relief to Black Portlanders. Over $700,000 has been distributed to Black Portlanders since our launch, and we've also established a mutual aid network of over 300 active volunteers, delivering food boxes, performing yard work, providing emotional support, and more.<br /><br />The Black Resilience Fund is co-founded by Cameron Whitten and Salomé Chimuku. Cameron is a local Portlander who has more than 5 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and donation accountability. Cameron has served as the Executive Director of local nonprofits such as Know Your City, Brown Hope, and Q Center. Salomé has over a decade of experience in public sector work, working with organizations such as Portland State University, the Urban League of Portland, and Unite Oregon. The Black Resilience Fund

On the evening of May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis Police. Thousands of people have come to the street to protest and make their voices heard. Following the beautiful peaceful protests, riots overtook the city and the Lake Street Corridor:a beacon for multiculturalism, black and brown entrepreneurship and the rise of family owned businesses. Du Nord Riot Recovery Fund

<p><strong>2019 - Atticus is still fighting cancer, Osteosarcoma.</strong> <br /><br />On Thursday May 16th, almost a year after Atticus' limb salvage surgery in 2018, Atticus had a leg amputation to continue in his fight against cancer.

<p>Irene was just about ready to go find work again after everything seemed to have calmed a bit. But Atticus' cancer is back so it will be another year of unemployment. Because she is receiving child support for her 3 children she is unable to get TANF. So, here we are again asking for donations to help Irene, Atticus, Anneka, and Angelena get through another year of battling cancer.  Irene is still needing help with rent and bills and general expenses for the year.

Atticus' Fight Against Cancer

On August 12th, 2017 there was a "Unite the Right" march of white nationalist and other right-wing groups (KKK, Neo-nazis, and white supremacists) that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia. These individuals were protesting against the removal of local confederate monuments, primarily the Robert E. Lee Statue in Emancipation Park. I arrived at Emancipation Park around 11 AM as a counter-protester to voice my opinion on racial tensions and to literally stand up for what I believe in. I was only there for a few minutes before I was hit with water bottles, maced with pepper spray, and had derogoratoy slurs hurled at me. Just forty-five minutes in to the rally our Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency to aid state response to violence. About fifteen minutes or so after that I was brutally attacked by white supremacists in the parking garage right beside the Charlottesville Police Station. I was chased and beat with metal poles. I was knocked unconscious repeatedly. Every time I went to stand up I was knocked back down. <a href="https://twitter.com/chuckmodi1/status/896409728959606789" target="_blank">VIDEO</a> If it was not for my friends that I came with I would have been beaten to a pulp. No law enforcement stepped in to help me. Once I was dragged off to some near by steps I was taken to the designated area for injured protesters &amp; counter-protesters. My injuries were too extensive to be treated at the scene so I was taken to the ER at Martha Jefferson Hospital. I was diagnsoed with a concussion, an ulnar fracture, and had to receive eight staples in my head. I also have a laceration across my right eyebrow, abrasions on my knees &amp; elbows, and a chipped tooth. I'm so blessed to be alive to tell my story and to show the world that racism is very much still alive. The funds will be used to pay for my medical bills. I appreciate the support from my friends, family, and the news platforms that have reached out to check on me. We will not let this fade &amp; disappear. I Was Beaten By White Supremacists 

<p dir="ltr">Our child is an beautiful artist and excellent student. She's a dual-enrollee in high school and community college. She's passionate about culture, linguistics and art. She is the first to find the goodness in others. She is kind, loving and devoted to doing the right thing. She is excited to continue her education at university to pursue international law so she can help people rise above their differences to solve problems together. Before last week, she would have told you she liked the police. She's even called on them to assist a friend or neighbor in trouble. But last week that all changed.</p>

<p dir="ltr">On February 14th, our dear child was shot and nearly killed by police. She was sad and crying. She just wanted to sit in her car and work through her anxiety attack. But the officers broke the window of her car, pulled her through it, tazed then shot her multiple times. They were rough with her. We are so blessed that she is out of critical care, but we are heartbroken. She is so shocked, confused and hurt. And what this means for her life, her sense of self and her family is a big scary unknown.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The police have suggested that she was dangerous or trying to harm them. She was not. She was just being a normal kid, having a hard day. She didn't deserve this. This could have been avoided. This could have been de-escalated. She could have been supported and taken to her home and mother just blocks away. But instead, she was traumatized. </p>

<p dir="ltr">Our family is united in the support and love of our baby. We are doing everything we can to care of her. For now, that means a safe place to recover away from the scene, support with medical bills, excellent rehab and mental healthcare and time with her family. If you can find love, prayers or resources to send her way, we are grateful. We have limited means and will soon run out of our savings. Any help you can provide would go a long way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As my sister is underage, these funds are being sent to her mother, Debra Robinson, and handled by her sister, Ayana Robinson.</p>

Break Through the Bullets

On August 10, 2016, Larnell Malik Bruce (aka Bubba/ Man-Man) was intentionally run over by a car. He sustained life-threatening injuries to his skull and brain stem. On August 13, 2016, his brain activity ceased. We lost our son, brother, cousin, nephew, and friend to a senseless crime. He was just 19 years old and still had a full life to live. <br /><br />Although his body still breathes, he is no longer here with us and we are left to take care of the things we weren't fully prepared for. Throughout the last few days, the medical expenses have gotten unexpectedly high and we now have to plan for a funeral that we weren't expecting. <br /><br />Though this tragedy has devastated our family, Larnell has the opportunity to save many lives through the Organ Donor program. <br /><br />We are asking for help to cover the funeral and medical expenses. Funeral/Medical Expenses for Bubba

Hello there. My name is Christopher Epling. Bobby Sullivan is known by a lot of people here in Pike County Kentucky. He's known all over the state really. I'd say all over the region even. To those who know Bobby, they know he's never without a smile. Never without having kind words to say. Uplifting and always so freely to give of his time, and his heart. Bobby has been a lot of things in his life. A social worker at the University of Kentucky is just one. For the past many years, Bobby has been a volunteer at the Pikeville Medical Center. He wouldn't tell you this, but I will. Bobby has volunteered over 10,000 hours there. Know how many hours there are in a year? 8,760. So if you were to start volunteering right now, it would take you volunteering every month, every week, every day, every hour, every minute, and every second of an entire year (that's without sleep) to volunteer as many hours as Bobby (and you'd be short 1,240 hours... just 51 days that's all). <br /><br />I count Bobby as my best friend. He's been there for me through a lot. I've gotten to know Bobby over the years, and there's been something that's been on my heart now almost as long as I've known him. Bobby needs help with something, and that's why I am creating this account for him. I want to help him. I want you to want to help him too. <br /><br />See, Bobby has to use a motorized chair to get to place to place. I ask him permission to share this, so it's okay. In case you don't have to use a chair like Bobby, you might not know how difficult it is to get that chair in and out of your vehicle. Bobby will be the first to tell you, he's not a 'spring chick' anymore (sorry Bobby, just in case). Having a chair lift to get his chair up and down off payment would help him so much. Right now he has to schedule going to the grocery (and every other decision) around when it's the least crowded. That way he can call and hopefully reach someone at the story that would bring a motorized chair out to him. Not all store do this either. In fact, in our town, only two do. He's tried to get the lift paid for through his insurance, but he can't. Without paying for it out of pocket, he can't get one. So, that's one reason I started this gofundme account.<br /><br />Another thing about not being able to get around without a motorized chair is the winter. You know how you and I might go out and start the vehicle on those cold winter mornings before work? You know, to let the car warm  up? Bobby can't do that. When Bobby goes out to his vehicle, he has to stay. It's too much on him to make a trip out, then back, then out again. I've asked him a million times how he manages to sit in his car on those terribly cold mornings while it warms up. His answer, like with anything that seems difficult to me, "Bud, you just do it".  I'd like to get Bobby an automatic starter for his car. That way he can push a button and his car start from his window. Then, when he gets to his car on those cold mornings, he has warmth like you and me.<br /><br />There's one more thing. Not too long ago Bobby's driver side door had an issue with the handle that opens the door from the inside. In order to open his door, Bobby has to roll down his window. This might not seem like the biggest inconvenience, but it can be when there's snow pouring down. Or rain. I'd like to get his door handle fixed with these funds as well. <br /><br />Besides these things, Bobby has other issues he needs help with on his vehicle. New tires, the trunk spring has warped, so you can't open the trunk without holding it up manually, etc. All these things we can fix for Bobby with this amount met.<br /><br />So I hope you will consider helping Bobby. You have to believe me when I say he deserves it. If you know Bobby, then you already know he does. It will make you feel good. It will make Bobby feel good. It's a win, win. For someone who gives to others so freely, I hope it's an easy decision. <br /><br />Give what you can. No amount is too small. No amount is too big either! Bobby Sullivan's Vehicle Upgrade

Life is pretty sweet for my dear friend, Tara. She is active (a big city bike commuter), she is a joyful  dancing maven (yes, she will admit to loving disco), and she is blissed out raising her five-year old twin boys who are the light and love of her heart. Days are full and life is good. AND to top it off, after years of hard work, in August this year, she finally landed her dream job helping people build their homes.<br /><br />What is not so wonderful about life right now, for her, however, is that she was just diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma (aka a brain tumor). Lost hearing and a creeping loss of facial sensation prompted an MRI a week ago, and that's when we heard about the tumor.<br /><br />What is also not so great is that she will not have passed her work probation until February 2016 and will only have three days' sick time earned by the time surgery is needed. She will not yet qualify for FMLA and has minimal savings to use during her post-procedure aftercare. Surgery has to happen in the next few weeks as the doctor says permanent hearing loss is at risk.<br /><br />Tara is the sole primary provider for her boys. Although she has tried to keep bills at a minimum, rent, food, utilities and childcare for two kids all add up! We are creating this GoFundMe account because she will have to be out if work for approximately ten weeks in order to recover. We are hoping to raise $10,000 to cover doctors' bills and living expenses while she goes through this procedure.<br /><br />We love our friend so much! Brain tumors suck!!

Our daughter Scarlet has been diagnosed with a Neuroblastoma(cancer) on her adrenal gland and it has moved to her bones.  She is facing months of aggressive treatments at Doernbecher Hospital in Portland.  We will be leaving our home, jobs and family to go support her through this nightmare.
