Samantha “Sam” Banks is an amazing percussionist and longtime drummer for Ruthie Foster. She is a true musician since she was a kid at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, and majoring in music in college. Her career ranges from her jazz band called Yasheed to church on Sundays to the international stage with Ruthie and other touring artists. She is a favorite with audiences, known for her big smile, big heart, beautiful soul and incredible artistry with drums, percussion instruments and spoons! Ruthie calls her “the heartbeat of our band”.

Friday, February 23, 2018, Sam suffered a sudden and major brain bleed that has her now in the Neuro ICU in the Texas Medical Center. At this point, doctors are still assessing the impacts to her.

Sam’s daughter Briana and mom Ms. Betty have been by her side since that devastating evening. Like too many musicians, Sam is underinsured—in fact, she has none. So her friends have started this site to help her and her family with the overwhelming expenses incurred and yet to come.

The money raised for Sam will help her family with:

·       Medical and Therapy expenses

·       Medical supplies needed for her recovery and care

·       Daily care and support

·       Transportation

·       General monthly living expenses

Thank you for your support. Please pass along this link to anyone you think would like to help Sam.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Fabian Perez and I am part of Ruthie's management team and sometimes fill in on the road as tour manager. While filling in, I really got to know the band and of course fell in love with Samantha. I feel that a majority of people here do not know who I am so I felt it would be good to introduce myself.

Now that is out of the way, THANK YOU to everyone for your thoughts, prayers, contributions, and for sharing! We all can not thank you enough.

I do want to personally thank Kasi who has been on the ground here in Houston and helping out in every way imaginable. The family and the band would be lost without you.

I would also like to thank Denby who has put up family members in his home from day one and still felt it necessary to donate. He also took the family and band to dinner last night where we all told stories of our beautiful Samantha and had some well needed laughs. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Many here have asked for updates about Sam's progress so I wanted to give you all my personal experience (with the family’s permission) during my first visit with her yesterday.

I am not going to lie, it’s tough seeing her like this. If you know me well I like to play the hard tough guy character but I turned into mush walking into her room. At first there was 2 or 3 of us in the room with her for about an hour while she slept and then without noticing, it was just Sam and I. I always love to joke with her and we are always cutting up on the road so my only instinct was to try and make her laugh. Suddenly her eyes were open. It was an overwhelming feeling that she could hear me and I that I was getting through.

She is not out of the woods yet but we all feel she is here to stay so please continue to the help in any way possible.

From Samantha's Daughter -

Music speaks a universal language that transcends any boundary lines. My mother is not only fluent but enjoyed fostering the love of music in those willing to dedicate their time to listen. If you've ever met mother, you first met her smile. The sincerity in her eyes, the kindness in her heart. If you have ever seen her perform she exposes her soul and keeps the tempo steady with the beat of her heart.

Friday evening my heart stopped for a moment when she collapsed. She's still in ICU here in the Texas Medical Center and although she's stable we aren't out of the woods just yet. Every day she beats the odds. Clinically she's showing signs of improvement. But the road ahead will be long and at times almost too much to bear.
Due to the severity of her injuries and our expected length of stay in the ICU, visitation is limited to family only. Once she's a bit stronger we will gladly accept visitors. Please be understanding of our sensitivity in these unexpected times.

The prayers, well wishes and words of encouragement have filled my aching heart with a warmth I could never put into words. The support from family and friends and the love of the ever faithful fan base keeps me speaking when I'm at a loss for words, holds my hand as I walk into her room and hugs me tight when the daylight has faded and the darkness fills me with doubt. I could never fathom the overflow of love that we've received.

Thank you…to everyone, those I know & have yet to meet,

Briana Banks
