Nicaragua Flood Relief

$20,200 of $20,000 goal

Nicaragua is in great need of our help right now!
Tropical Storm Nate caused mass flooding along the southern Pacific coast last week.  The area has never experienced such severe devastation and entire communities along the southern Pacific coast are in dire need of help.  Many families have lost everything and every family has been affected in one way or another.
Right now, people need the basics - clean water, food, clothing, baby formula, diapers, etc.

My name is Jeffrey Soderlind.  I am from Pensacola, Florida and have been living in Nicaragua since 2005.  I am the owner of Horizon Group ( www.horizonnicaragua.com), which is a local real estate, construction and vacation rental business that has been based in the Tola region of Nicaragua since 2005.  I also work at Surfari Charters ( www.surfaricharters.com), which is a local surf camp that has been operating in the area since 2002.

We are raising funds to offer support to as many families in the Tola region as possible, with a focus in the following areas - Las Cañas, El Astillero, Las Salinas, La Virgen, Limon 1 and Limon 2.  We have already provided our own personal funding that is being distributed to our employees and their families this week, but there is an immense need for more support to all of the families in the area.  There are many great individuals and organizations on the ground helping and we will be coordinating efforts with as many as possible.

The first stage of our efforts will be to raise $5,000 to provide the basics to 100 families.  This includes drinking water, rice, beans, cooking oil, sugar, pasta, soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, oatmeal and more.  We will also be using funds to purchase water filters through Waves for Water ( www.wavesforwater.org) to distribute through the communities as access to clean water is one of the most essential needs.

Once we meet our first goal of $5,000, we will continually raise our goal by $5,000 until we feel we have provided sufficient aid to restoring these families lives.  I will be withdrawing these funds to my personal US account on a regular basis and sending them to my personal account in Nicaragua in order to continue the flow of funds to purchase the needed supplies for our efforts.  I will be providing regular updates outlining how these funds are being spent and what work we are doing.

Any amount you are willing to donate helps!

Thank you!

It has been a while since you've heard from us, but we still have been working with a handful of groups who are providing aid to communities that are still feeling the repercussions of the flood. Here's a short summary of how your donations have made a positive impact in our communities for the last 2 months...

1. Working alongside the Mayor's wife, we donated $1,000 to purchase 70 sheets of metal decking to 14 families in the Astillero area that were used for roofing as homes were rebuilt.

2. With $200, we were able to donate 55 five-gallon buckets to the CREA foundation that were distributed with water filters to families in the Limon 2 area.

3. As a big "thank you" to the local communities, we donated $500 to purchase supplies (cups, plates, bowls and silverware) to a Christmas party for all of the Nicaraguan volunteers who aided in the relief efforts. All of these supplies were reusable, not throw away items, and these families took these supplies home with them to replace lost items in the flood. This was organized in part by David and Ana Shelton from AE Integrated, both who have been VERY involved with continuing aid.

4. The most beneficial donation that we were able to make was purchasing a $2,100 heavy-duty waste-water pump that has been used to pump out and clean wells throughout the entire Tola region. This has been huge because the smaller pumps were unable to discharge the deep wells. The well cleanings were spearheaded by David Shelton and he continues to oversee them with the help of Rancho Santana. Over 300 wells have been cleaned since the efforts commenced!

As of today, we are only $50 shy of our $20,000 goal. We are currently assessing additional needs in the community and will touch base with a new goal once we've determined these needs. As of now, we plan to contribute funding to the well cleaning efforts because access to clean water is essential.

It has been amazing to have all of you come together to help the local communities here in the Tola region. Thank you!
