My hearing aids are old and one of them died yesterday. My ear doctor has given me loaner hearing aids until we can figure out how I can pay for them.
Health Insurance doesn't cover hearing aids: they are considered 'Cosmetic.' Being unable to hear is isolating and frustrating and dangerous. Isolating because I can't socialize if I can't hear you. I can't talk on the phone, because I only hear parts of words. Frustrating because it's exhausting to keep asking people to repeat themselves; I just give up more often than not. Dangerous because I can't hear danger, whether it be warning signals or something approaching. My hearing aids aren't cosmetic. They help me do my job--I'm a teacher! And they keep me from falling into isolation and depression.
The loaner hearing aids I have are amazing. I'm literally hearing things I haven't heard in decades! They sync to my phone so I can actually have a conversation that doesn't end in tears. Without my hearing aids, my ability to do my job will be seriously limited.
However--I'm a teacher. I don't have an extra $5000 laying around and my insurance will not cover the cost of the hearing aids. My friends and family know how hard it is for me to ask for help, but I'm asking.
The pair of hearing aids I'm wearing right now costs $5000. Every little bit helps. Every penny donated will go toward the purchase of my hearing aids.
