“Listen Smart: Safely Handling the Power of Sound” Re-Make In Production
Listen Smart, the award-winning educational film produced to help teens avoid future hearing loss by learning how to safely handle the power of sound, is back in production. An updated version of the film is anticipated for release in Spring 2019.
Winning the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award in 2004, the current film has been used in hundreds of school systems, featured as an exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, served as an important source tool for H.E.A.R. (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers)and features a wide array of recording artists, including Metallica, Cyndi Lauper, Ozzy Osbourne, Wyclef Jean, and Linkin Park, amongst others.
“It was always our intention to update or re-create Listen Smart every few years,” stated the film’s creator and executive producer, Dan Beck. “The most credible people to discuss managing the consumption of high-volume music are the artists themselves. We want to keep it relevant with artists that appeal most to middle school and high school students, and young adults.”
A student team from Greenville University, in Greenville, Illinois, under the auspices of the college’s innovative “Experience First” program will spearhead the production effort. Dr. Joseph Montano, Chief of Audiology at NY Presbyterian/Weil-Cornell Medical Center, and Dr. Marshall Chasin, Head of the Musicians Clinic of Canada, are providing the essential expertise to the hearing health message.
The production team is currently reaching out to record companies, managers, and music PR professionals to provide interview footage with music stars embracing the idea of quality, safe consumption of great music. A limited number of artists will be featured with an emphasis to appeal to the diverse musical interests of the teen and young adult audience.
The updated release of Listen Smart is being produced through the Hearing And Music Foundation, a 501c3 that was created to be a home for the film, and will be available for free through various social media platforms, hearing health organizations, and school programs.
Although costs are anticipated to modest, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to raise $12,000 for the production of the updated release.
Contributors of $50 or more will be listed in the thank you credits of the full-length version of the film and 100% of proceeds received above the cost of production will be given to H.E.A.R. (a 501c3 not-for-profit) to support their hearing health initiatives.
