“KELLY CAN” Surgery Balance Goal: $25,000 by January 1, 2018
• Kelly Chartier is a passionate Smithfield, RI High School Music teacher with a genuine love for the arts and her students. She is also great mom to four kids, ranging in age from 6 to 11.
• Kelly is fighting a daily war with her own body. Since 2013, Kelly has suffered from gastroparesis, a life-threatening condition. Basically, her stomach is paralyzed. For almost four years, Kelly has not eaten food and relies on intravenous nutrients to survive.
• Kelly is being treated by a Philadelphia-based physician with expertise in gastroparesis. This nationally-renown specialist believes Kelly needs surgery. Her health and quality of life will continue to deteriorate significantly without an operation to insert a devise in her stomach to make it function normally again.
• Her insurance carrier refuses to pay for this operation. It is not performed or well-known in Rhode Island. If Kelly lived elsewhere, or had other insurance (not possible for her family), this procedure would be fully covered. Instead, Kelly has to pay completely out of pocket for this surgery.
• Unfortunately, Kelly’s six-year-old son has undergone eight surgeries for dysphagia over the past several years. The combination of Kelly and his medical expenses continue to add financial stress to the family.
