As friends and family of Adam, we have all benefited from his extraordinary generosity and kind spirit. Now, we have an opportunity to extend our generosity to Adam.

As an eleven-year-old, Adam was diagnosed with a case of Crohn’s disease specialists call rare and aggressive: the “worst case” many doctors have encountered. In the last three years, Crohn’s has devastated Adam’s body: he has undergone numerous surgeries to remove his entire colon, portions of his small intestine, rectum, and anus. The disease has compromised Adam’s mobility, caused him to lose over 100 pounds, and required intensive daily pain management.  Even with these challenges, Adam has continued to give to others, often skyping in from a hospital bed to teach his classes or finding ways to volunteer for the Nebraska Writing Project and other programs.

Adam planned for another surgery this May, to remove the  remainder of the damaged small intestine and repair a fistula that has developed in his stomach. However, this crucial surgery was delayed, because he developed sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection. The sepsis seriously jeopardized his kidneys, and he was airlifted from Lincoln to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where he is now. Before he can undergo surgery, doctors need to ensure his health is stable enough to endure this very complicated procedure.  As the surgery continues to be pushed back, longer stays at Mayo and trips between Mayo Clinic and Nebraska for his partner, Tiffany, are required.

We can help Adam by donating funds, which will support him and Tiffany as they face Adam’s indefinite stay at Mayo. Here’s how your donation will help:

It will allow Tiffany to take unpaid time off of work to be at Mayo with Adam, serving as a health advocate and providing him support, and later to care for him at home as he recovers from a difficult surgery. Currently, she is only able to be at Mayo on the weekends, which means Adam is often alone at the hospital and Tiff must drive six hours between the two cities to be with him on the weekends.

One unpaid week off work = $425 (Tiffany has taken four and will likely need to take
more)

One night hotel stay in Rochester = $150

Car travel to and from Rochester = $100

It will allow Adam and Tiffany to pay back some of the debt they have accrued over the last three years as a result of Adam’s multiple surgeries and lost work opportunities.
Health care debt: $10,000

It will help defray the many costs associated with Adam’s condition that are not covered by health insurance, including ostomy supplies = $2,000

It will allow Adam and Tiffany to purchase furniture to make the household more accessible for Adam’s disability = $2,500
