Have you ever had a wish come true? A dream become reality? A big goal achieved?
Right now I’m inches away from making one of my biggest dreams come true...so close that I can feel it brushing my fingertips, but some unexpected bumps in the road are making this dream seem harder and harder to reach.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved designing and fashion. I’ve always felt that to really get a grasp on the design world, I needed to move and study oversees. After graduating with an apparel design degree from Louisiana State University, I started looking into graduate programs in Europe, but at the time they seemed impossible to get into. I had some loans from school to pay off and needed to start working and saving money. As the years went by, I kept looking at the schools and just knew that’s where I needed to be.
I recently participated in a fashion show at Fashion Week New Orleans, and in an interview they asked what my future goals were...and the first thing I could think of was going to get my masters in design oversees. The moment I said it out loud, I knew I needed to do everything I could to make this happen.
After editing and re-editing my portfolio, a lengthy application process and multiple long distance phone interviews... I got accepted into the Masters of Collection Design program at Polimoda, a design school in Florence, Italy! I was elated! Months of stressing out about whether or not I was going to even get in and I was finally one step closer to my dream! Now the next step was to apply for a student loan and visa, neither of which seemed to terribly hard, just time consuming...
That’s when things started to unravel... Polimoda was a private university, they weren’t on the approved list of schools that the U.S. banks work with, so no U.S. bank or lender will give me the student loan. I was crushed. Where was this information when I was researching schools and loans? I had no idea that this was something I would run into, and now that I have... I’ve been trying to research anything I could on how I can acquire the money to get over there.
I looked into private loans through the bank, but those seem impossible... I wont be able to work while I’m in school (its a 14 month accelerated program) so I wouldn’t be able to pay off the monthly note. My family has offered to help with what they can, but they have my brothers college to worry about, their retirement and with some recent health scares, now they have some large medical bills to deal with. I’m selling things off and tapping into savings to try and pay for what I can, but I still need help.
My mom suggested I make one of these fundraiser profiles and to just put my story out there. I know times are tough for everyone right now, and even $5 to my cause could help me out...I’m not expecting anything from anyone, but if you’re willing to contribute, that would be amazing!
Thank you soo much for reading my story!
