Taking the Spork on the Road

Donation protected
About a year ago, I had an idea to head out on the road and prove that you can, in fact, eat healthy on the road using locally-sustainable resources, and along the way meet interesting people and find restaurants that are “diamonds in the rough”.  I was completely set on buying my own RV and heading out into the wild blue yonder, as far as my camper would take me.

Was.

But life changes, situations change, ideas blossom and grow.

I’ve turned this campaign on at people’s request, after turning it off

Because

I have a HUGE problem asking anyone for anything. It’s an issue of pride, and I believed for so long that if I am meant to do anything, I will be able to make it happen myself.

Plus, when I ask for help, there are an amount of people who always write me private messages calling me a beggar, telling me that they can’t believe that I’m asking others to do my work for me, that I want a free ride.

But here I am, asking you. If I’ve learned anything in my short 41 years on this planet, it’s that we can’t do anything alone. All our achievements happen on the shoulders of (often) giants.

So here goes. I’ll give it one more shot. Will you please be my giants?

Goals:

To drive all over the United States, finding diamonds in the rough - chefs that aren't well known, but are doing their part to build farm-to-fork restaurants and communities in cities both large and small. I will also cook & eat what's locally available, within a 50-mile radius of wherever I am. On video, as people allow.

To build awareness of, and participation in, sustainable communities through community gardens, farmer's markets, and local goods.

To increase nutrition awareness and food availability. So many people are unable to access proper nutrition simply because of proximity and cost – yes, even in this country.

To teach farming for small spaces – even apartment dwellers can grow many things that would otherwise be inaccessible either through cost or proximity.

To connect the under-fed with programs suited to them, and to help communities start programs where there are none. Nobody should ever go hungry, especially not in this country.

To learn everything I can about the community I am in, find more ways to be helpful that are specific to them, and carry what they teach me to the next places on the map.

What the Money Goes To

The vehicle, which must match my message of sustainability. So, it can’t be a gas-guzzling machine. I was originally leaning toward a motorhome, but as it turns out, those are not only gas-guzzlers, they wreak havoc on the environment.

I am selling my 20-year-old Nissan Pathfinder to begin the funding. I will buy a newer hybrid SUV.

I will stay in green hotels with kitchenettes. They must have low-to-no carbon footprint.
