Galchester magazine: Issue 1
Doação protegida
Hello friends of Becky Burgum !
In the final year of my Fashion Journalism degree at Central Saint Martins I have created 'Galchester' magazine and I am looking for donations to help get my magazine off the ground.
It would be so unbelievably appreciated if you could help with any pounds or pennies you have to spare and any left over money will go either all towards charities Mancheser Women's Aid / Every Month, or split between them and saving for the next issue!
What is Galchester magazine?
Galchester is a bi-annual magazine that celebrates the talented women born, or based, in Manchester. It acts as a directory to connect creative women in the growing creative hub that is my hometown and champions the Mancunian women that have been working under (and over) the radar, giving them the platform to inspire others with their achievements.
Manchester has an extremely male identity, from the Hacienda and Sean Ryder, George Best through to Liam Gallagher despite the city's incredible suffragette and female history. This year marks 100 years since some women gained the right to vote, and this magazine celebrates to the true worker bees of Manchester, encouraging readers to be as self-assured and confident as their male counterparts. It gives an insight into how these women got to their current position, so as to inspire young girls aged 16-26 to get into the arts.

Why?
When I was younger I knew nothing about what kind of creative careers were out there, all I knew was that I wasn’t enamoured by following the same finance/medicine/law paths as my friends. If I had been more educated about creative career opportunities it would have saved a huge amount of confusion and panic. I would have loved to have one place that not only provided inspiration, but explained how successful creative women had progressed in their careers, so this is what I have tried to do with Galchester. I want it to be as informative as it is inspiring.
If you can’t see it, you can’t be it. Women are more likely to achieve their dreams and aspirations when they see other women succeed, and studies have shown that in part, it is a lack of confidence that prevents women from achieving higher level careers. This magazine aims to encourage women to get into the creative field, a sector still dominated by men. I have spoken to many MMU students who have explained that throughout their three year course they have had not one female speaker give a talk, so I know how necessary this magazine is to give young women creative women role models.

I am launching my magazine at 'Batty presents: Fourplay and Galchester', a joint event with my amazingly talented friend Hattie James-Weed at Sid Motion Gallery, Kings Cross on Wednesday 9th May, 6-9pm. This event will simultaneously welcome the birth of us as creative duo ‘Batty’.
Drinks will be provided by BLOOM Gin, created by one of the only female master distillers in the world, Joanne Moore.

Please all come down and get your contribution’s worth!
