On November 6th, I will be having a hysterectomy, where my left ovary, left and right Fallopian tubes, uterus and cervix will be removed. This will be my fourth surgery to support my overall health while living with Endometriosis and the first surgery I'll have to affirm my gender identity.
I was diagnosed with Endometriosis seven years ago but I have had the disease for twenty years. Most days I'm in unbearable pain, I go to the ER multiple times a year and have had four surgeries in the past seven years in an effort to keep my pain minimized and my organs healthy. The disease process itself causes my pelvic and abdominal organs to adhere to each other which can be very painful and dangerous.
Four months ago I started my medical transit, and I now take T every week. I am so deeply happy and feel more like myself and more excited to be in my body everyday. For a person with complex trauma and a chronic illness, this is a revelation.
I am also having this surgery to support my gender affirmation, to remove the organs and systems that keep me bound to a sex and gender experience that has never served me, nor suited me.
Because of my chronic illness, I have thousands upon thousands of dollars in medical debt that only increases with every trip to the ER, doctor visit and surgery. This surgery will be no different.
Most days I'm not sure if I will every get out from under the weight of them and I am asking for your help. That doesn't even touch the tens of thousands in education debt that I could never dream of paying off. My disability means that I will most likely never achieve any type of financial stability.
Please help in whatever way you can, share this with everyone you know. As a trans person, as a chronically ill person, as a traumatized person - the news that this administration is trying to erase us, and cut off our access to care is terrifying. I don't know what my future brings and how much longer I will be able to get the care I need.
