(YAALI) Fellowship to Ghana

My name is Sytonia Reid and I am a Junior, English major/Journalism minor at Howard University. I am reaching out through GoFundMe because I have been given the opportunity to travel to Ghana this May 2016 through the Young Africana Leadership Initiative (YAALI) Fellowship. This trip to Ghana will be my first International experience.
In 2010, the Obama Administration launched the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in which a selection of young talent from the African continent were brought to the U.S. for professional mentorship, leadership training and academic advancement.
Howard University has expanded President Obama's model through the YAALI Fellowship in which young Africana leaders (Afro- American, Caribbean and Latin Americans) now travel across seas to the African continent to develop their own intellectual talent and gain the skills and strategies needed to become a Global Citizen. The Fellowship emphasizes the call to service and entails a research or service/research project. The five main components of the program are education, service learning, research, praxis and travel.
As an undergraduate student, I am in the process of crafting my future career goals and expectations. I am of the belief that whatever you do, it should ultimately work to serve others. My passion lies in culture, social dynamics, politics and humanitarianism, so the opportunity to travel to the African continent, which is so vast in social and political development, would be no less than life-changing for me. The leadership, research and service-learning skills I gain from the trip I know will not only compliment my work as a writer and journalist, but will be a season of newfound personal growth.
An interest that is close to my heart and often at the forefront of my mind is Women's Rights and Empowerment around the world, and so I am using this opportunity granted by (YAALI) to explore just how the subordination of women in all its manifestations- culturally, educationally, politically, in the family, in sexual relationships, etc. is acheived. It is through the research about the socialization of women in Ghana and West Africa, the work of analyzing these issues with other young women and fellow scholars, and the privilege to experience a new reality from another woman's worldview, that I seek and find, a stronger sense of how we are all impacted by gender inequaltiy, and how we can begin reforming our societies for the better.
A total $3,500 will cover transportation to and from Ghana, tour throughout Ghana's cultural attractions, daily food and unlimited water, hotel reservations and medical immunizations. I am seeking scholarships, work and any aid that I can find to reach my goal. Any contribution made through this page of any amount, would be more than a gift to me of which I am so thankful.
