Margaret's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
On May 14th, 2015 my mother, Margaret Adams, went out for a bike ride with my dad on the new bicycle she got as a Mother's Day gift. They were riding on the country road that they live on, and my mother got a little too close to the edge of the road, lost her balance, and fell into a ditch. She immediately could not feel her legs. This is where our nightmare started. Over the next 24 hours we learned the she has fractured her T3 vertebrae, as well as a couple ribs, and that her spinal cord is "smashed". As a result of the spinal cord injury, Margaret is now paralyzed from the upper/mid back, down. She spent 15 days in Neurological Intensive Care, and was just moved to inpatient rehab on May 30th, where she will remain for several weeks before coming home. My parents' home is not handicap/wheelchair accessible, and many expensive modifications are now necessary in order to accommodate Margaret's new way of life. Prior to this accident, she worked a full time job and was an equal contributor to household finances. The loss of her ability to work, in conjunction with the costs associated with the home modifications, medical bills, and ongoing care are what has inspired her family to reach out for help in getting these costs covered. Margaret has been married for 42 years to her high school sweetheart, has 5 children, 5 children-in-law, and 8 grandchildren. She was always on the go and busy with work, her grandkids, traveling to see her son in Chicago, and spending time with family on a daily basis. This injury and it's subsequent prognosis have been a huge blow to the whole family, but we are determined to persevere!!! Thank you for reading Margaret's story and helping in any way you can.
