With the Trump Administration intensifying its assault on immigrants, including refugees, we at SOMA-U Refugee Support must raise legal support funds for the refugees we have worked with and come to know and love.
Our small volunteer group, commissioned by the Biden Administration's Welcome Corps program in late 2023, has so far helped six refugees (in three family units) resettle. All the people we are working with have been thriving, with all the adults in full-time jobs and the three families in stable housing. But the Trump Administration -- violating international law and the U.S. Constitution -- is subjecting vetted refugees to new interrogations -- and detaining them without cause.
We have already retained counsel for the first refugee we helped to resettle, a Somali who relocated to Minneapolis and has been approached by ICE. The bills in that case could mount fast, and our other refugee friends may need legal help at short notice. With all immigrants under threat, legal counsel is hard to come by, its costs rising. We are ready, but we need your help. Thank you for your support.
