Uncle Macky - Derek McGuire - Native Hawaiian

Hello! My name is Gita Rose, a Californian American, and I am fundraising for my friend Uncle Macky, Derek McGuire. Macky is a native Hawaiian elder who is experiencing a very challenging time. Uncle Macky is a master canoe builder and tiki wood carver with so much wisdom yet to share.

He's been experiencing severe health issues for the past few years. Recently has been in and out of surgeries and the hospital for the last few months.

Uncle Macky's younger sister suddenly passed away as well just last August.

He is now out of the hospital, staying with friends but would eventually like to find his own place to live. He does get some government aid, but he's just barely making ends meet. And could also really benefit from a new breathing machine

Macky is a person that has done his best, through many challenges, to be able to always give to his community and all those interested in Hawaiian Culture.

There are so many ways we can know the true nature of our abundance as a part of nature itself; money is only one of those ways. But I know some extra cash would greatly help my friend right now to receive the gift of life and have a chance at a full recovery.

Uncle Macky and I have also been recording and sharing his story of remembering what it means to be Hawaiian, as well as sharing the history of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. We hope to continue to share this important story and Macky's specific traditional wood carving and Keala Hoe (path of the paddle - canoe knowledge.
