Uganda Village Project Internship Summer 2021

I am currently in my last year of grad school, in the school of Public Health at George Washington University, in the Design Monitoring and Evaluation Program. I have worked hard the last two years in completing my degree program and now it is time for me to put what I have learned into action. I have been selected for a Team Leader position with the Uganda Village Project Internship program. This means that for two months this summer, I have the opportunity to volunteer in the rural district of Iganga, Uganda, and work with the local community to provide health care resources, education on sanitation, and reproductive health care. As a team leader, I am responsible for implementing UVP's Health Villages Program in a new village with my team and setting up a three year intervention to increase the health status of the local community, decrease mortality and morbidity, and prevent the spread of HIV and Malaria. Due to the current pandemic, limited access to resources, and the unstable health care system of Uganda, this program is needed more than ever.
I have created this GoFundMe to cover the remaining program fee of $1,600 (originally $2,500) and help out with my flight to the Entebbe, Uganda (roughly $1,700-$2,200 for the cheapest tickets from Austin, TX). I will be paying for my vaccines, visa, and other preparation costs on my own. I am asking for your help because I believe in the UVP mission and I would love your support to do this program. My program fee covers the cost of my time with the Uganda Village Project (transportation, food, shelter) and the remainder of the program fee goes to support the work that the Uganda Village Project does. HOW WE DO IT
The Healthy Villages Model
Healthy Villages started in 2009 as a program addressing rural healthcare and public health in Uganda. We work at a grassroots level, partnering with rural communities to improve provision of healthcare and preventative health education to underserved populations in the Iganga district of Uganda. It is a three-year program to establish sustainable health practices and empower community members through education and community involvement. In each of our Healthy Villages, we:
∙ Partner with and train Village Health Teams (VHTs), which function as a community’s initial healthcare contact
∙ Provide education on malaria, HIV/AIDS, sanitation, family planning, fistula, and other critical health topics
∙ Bring access to preventative healthcare (HIV testing, family planning, etc.) ∙ Collaborate with local partners to create referral networks
∙ Distribute subsidized malaria nets and create sustainable network for the buying and selling of such nets
