Zane is currently in the pediatric ICU in Augusta (3 hours from home). He is on a sedated, on a ventilator, and being aggressively treated for lung and kidney failure caused by an Autoimmune Disease that we didn’t know he had. Zane is on dialysis daily right now because his kidneys are really damaged. in addition to the costs associated with a medical flight, and a multi week stay in the ICU, we will also have physical therapy and ongoing outpatient treatment once Zane is eventually discharged.
Full story:
2 weeks ago Zane said he didn’t feel good. We took him to the doctor on Tuesday October the 10th and they said he had a cold but gave us a referral for a chest X-ray in case he got worse.
A couple days later he said he was feeling fatigued so we took him to get the X-ray that Thursday. We never heard anything back so we figured no news is good news.
Monday 10/16 he was really fatigued and said he was having trouble breathing so Tab took him to the ER in Lawrenceville where they decided to admit him, then he started coughing blood so they moved him to the ICU.
They almost immediately came in and said we want to move him to a children’s hospital and the closest one with an open ICU bed is in Augusta (a 3 hour drive away) so we are going to send Z on a helicopter and you guys can drive.
We got to Children’s Hospital of Georgia on Tuesday 10/17 afternoon and they came in on Wednesday 10/18 early morning and said we have no idea what’s causing this so we want to put him on a ventilator until we start to figure things out.
He’s still on the ventilator and they have identified that he has an autoimmune disease called microscopic polyangiitis which uses your body’s antibodies to fight against your body instead of against a sickness.
His lungs and kidneys are in failure but they’re aggressively treating him. Some days we see a little itty bit step forward, some days we see steps backwards but the doctors are confident that he will come home with us at some point in the future. They don’t know if that means next week, next month, or next year.
Please continue to keep Zane in your thoughts and prayers.
Humbly and with sincere gratitude.
This GoFundMe campaign has been created to provide Zane and his family with the necessary financial assistance to cover medical expenses that insurance may not fully cover and to help alleviate the financial strain caused by his parents inability to work. The funds raised will go towards Zane's medical bills, rehabilitation, therapy and other related expenses that will aid in Zane's healing process
