Hello Compassionate Souls,
Thank you for showing up. You are about to learn the story of how a kind, loving 75 yr old couple got swindled out of their home and retirement, now facing the reality of possibly being homeless.
Personal Story:
In February 2022, my parents were approached by a real estate broker who claimed he had a way for them to pay down their mortgage while using the equity of the house to pay off debt. He promised them that by using his strategy, they would become debt & mortgage free. In the process, the title was deeded to someone else who blatantly took advantage of the situation and them. Now my parents “owe rent” to the tune of almost $50k for the home they themselves live in (now as tenants) and have owned for the last 13 years. This was never the plan presented or expected, the home was supposed to go back to them within a 6 month time period which did not happen. The person who stole their title took a loan out which was never paid and now the house is now in foreclosure and an eviction process has begun.
Now, instead of enjoying retirement, my 75-year-old parents must deal with the dark reality of losing their home for good.
To help you understand how my parents could fall victim to such a scam, please allow me to offer a brief background summary. Several years before all this took place, my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and my father had a brain tumor. Due to these illnesses and rapid decline of health, they fell behind on their mortgage. During the pandemic, the bank had offered them an alternative payment plan that would raise their monthly payment. Due to already declined health, that was a daunting proposition. Later in the same year, my Dad was officially diagnosed with dementia.
Summary of what happened = trusting the wrong people who took advantage.
At any age, an experience like this one would be extremely stressful. Now amplify that with advanced age and illness. This is a frightful amount of stress for them, for me, for us. We’ve spent thousands of dollars to identify what went wrong, and still there is no guarantee.
With only two to three months left to navigate the legal system, and very humble resources, the reality is that they can pay for either legal fees, medical expenses or moving costs. But not all of them. Imagine having to choose between taking care of your health or paying first, last and security in order to move. My Mom and I are now left to make some unimaginable choices and with ill health and a fixed income, those choices are that much more difficult to make.
When we started 2023 earlier this year in January, we had great expectations for a celebratory 50th Wedding Anniversary. It was a happy occasion despite my mother’s recent injury to her leg, leaving her unable to walk without a walker. This year was also the 75th birthday for each of them. Many blessings and beautiful moments shared, this year was meant to be a milestone year and a prosperous one. A time generally designated for love, support and deep reverence together as a family. We did have a party and many of their friends attended, we celebrated and rejoiced. My parents, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine in the 1970's with a vision of a prosperous and bright future created a life for themselves and my sister and I. They worked very hard to create a stable home that emphasized loyalty and honesty. They provided a life built on the thread of deep family values and love. I grew up knowing I was loved, and I love my family. We support and stand by each other. My parents’ love was not limited to their daughters. They were always serving others with a big heart. My parents were, and are, honest and trustworthy; perhaps sometimes to a fault.
That misplaced trust has brought us here. My hard-working, elderly parents are now facing the hard reality that they will likely lose their home and have lost their entire retirement. I continue to pray that money generated through this outreach will sow seeds of hope to emerge through these difficult times.
Becoming a Part of the Solution:
My goal in sharing this information is to help my parents. I admit that. But there’s something else. By sharing this story of fraud, senior abuse and exploitation, my prayer is that perhaps we can help stop another family from experiencing the pain and suffering that has come from this. That would be something good to come from this.
When scammed or lied to, it is increasingly hard to trust people. I really hope that, with the help of the generous community at large, we can once again rebuild our trust in people. I invite you to be a part of our mission. Every donation, no matter how small, plays a pivotal role. Your involvement can be the turning point that restores their security and peace of mind.
