Yesterday, my dear friend's Goldendoodle, Bella, was involved in a serious accident. She was hit by a truck after wiggling out of her collar and chasing a rabbit. While we are so grateful she is alive and stable, her road to recovery is just beginning and will be lengthy.
Bella suffered a crushed foot and a severe "degloving" wound on her leg and foot. Her leg got caught in the wheel of the truck, and much of her skin and fur was torn off. In veterinary terms, a degloving injury means the skin and tissue have been torn away from the underlying bone and muscle. This is a complex, high-risk trauma that requires urgent reconstructive surgery to prevent infection and save her limb. Without this specialized care, she would face certain amputation.
Her post-surgical follow-up is treated much like a severe burn, in that she will need to be seen by her veterinarian daily to have her wound cleaned and bandage changed. She will need continuous antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication to keep her comfortable. But, for this moment, we are primarily concerned with having her urgent reconstructive surgery. Once that milestone is complete, we will update with the next steps.
The outpouring of support from friends, family, and our local community has been a light in this dark time. We have been able to cover much of her medical costs through friends, family, our community, and CareCredit. We are now looking to bridge the final gap of $800 to ensure she receives her initial reconstructive surgery, and depending on how the surgery goes, her post-surgical care is estimated at $1,000-$3,000. Again, we will have a better idea after her surgery.
How You Can Help
Your kindness, donations, or simply sharing this page means the world to Bella’s family. The funds will go directly toward her surgical care and the specialized veterinary treatment required to give her the greatest chance at walking on all fours again and the best quality of life possible.
We thank you in advance for your positive thoughts, prayers, and generosity!
