I'm Amber and I am starting up a not-for-profit called "The Dakini Foundation", which seeks to raise awareness and advocate for social responsibility in contexts of altered states of consciousness.
I am seeking funds to cover basic start-up costs such as government registration, website development, and resource creation.
Why do we exist?
We recognise that altered states, for all their potential to heal and transform, are also able to be taken advantage of. It is not abnormal to experience or to hear of experiences of people feeling psychologically or sexually harmed in spiritual settings or contexts such as with psychedelics, meditation, and other spiritual practices.
However, this reality is not yet part of the mainstream conversation around altered states!
To this end, The Dakini Foundation exists to employ dedicated research efforts to understand how this harm and misuse occurs. We then translate this knowledge into accessible resources that help to mitigate harms. These are distributed free of charge or at low cost for facilitators and participants of varied altered state practices such as meditation, psychedelics, breathwork, hypnosis, and more.
We will:
- Conduct dedicated research into how harm occurs, and the social dynamics that support safety in altered states of consciousness and best honour their therapeutic potential
- Translate knowledge into accessible resources that help facilitators and participants understand and mitigate harm in altered state practices
- Provide resulting resources to altered state centres, facilitators, and spaces (e.g., music festivals, breathwork and yoga centres, psychedelic therapy practices)
- Host seminars and workshops that inform and support socially responsible dynamics for facilitators and attendees
- Broadcast dedicated conversations with experts through podcasts and other media artifacts about social responsibility
- Increase accessibility to therapists specialised in this sort of trauma
