Hello!
Welcome to our revamped crowdfunding campaign for Surfing in Afghanistan, a 14-page proof-of-concept short film about an American Marine suffering from the effects of hallucinatory PTSD and an Afghan national soldier who saves him from an uncertain fate. Together, they embark on a trek across war-torn Afghanistan in a Volkswagen bus to surf a thousand miles away in Pakistan.
Mission Statement
My mission as a filmmaker is to champion individuality, challenge conformity, and celebrate the courage to defy societal norms through storytelling. Through my work, I aim to explore themes of individualism, self-discovery, and pursuing one's unique path, inspiring audiences to question tradition and resist blind obedience.
Surfing in Afghanistan exemplifies this mission, challenging the status quo and inviting viewers to contemplate the consequences of unquestioned conformity in the face of conflict. Through this passion project, I aim to break free from stereotypes, humanize soldiers, and offer a glimmer of hope and connection in a world marred by division.
The Story
In the desolate expanse of war-torn Afghanistan, Surfing in Afghanistan unfolds as a poignant exploration of unexpected connections amidst chaos. The story follows an American Marine, Taylor, and an Afghan National Soldier, Atiq, whose chance encounter sparks a journey of redemption and understanding. As they traverse the barren landscape in an old Volkswagen bus, they confront their inner demons, grappling with the scars of war and the pursuit of an elusive freedom. Against societal upheaval and personal turmoil, the film delves into themes of identity, sacrifice, and the human quest for solace in adversity. Through Taylor and Atiq's harrowing odyssey, Surfing in Afghanistan offers a profound meditation on the complexities of human nature and the enduring power of hope amidst despair.

The Why
Surfing in Afghanistan was born out of a desire to challenge conventional narratives surrounding war and conflict. Through this film, we aim to humanize soldiers' experiences, offering a deeper understanding of their struggles beyond the battlefield. By delving into themes of resilience, individuality, and the search for meaning, we strive to provoke thought and foster empathy for those affected by war.
Why Now?
In today's world, where conflicts persist and the impact of war extends far beyond the battlefield, the need for nuanced and empathetic storytelling is more pressing than ever. Surfing in Afghanistan comes at a crucial moment in time, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the human cost of war and the universal quest for hope and connection amidst adversity. With its timely exploration of complex themes, this film seeks to spark meaningful conversations and inspire positive change in our understanding of conflict and its aftermath.
What is a Proof-of-Concept?
A proof of concept short film is a condensed representation of a larger project, typically from a feature-length screenplay or concept. Its purpose is to concisely encapsulate the essence of the story, characters, themes, and visual style, serving as evidence of the project's viability. By drawing from 14 pages of our feature script, our self-contained short film acts as a precursor, showcasing our narrative and visual potential. It aims to intrigue festival audiences, investors, and producers, offering a fresh perspective on the human experience during war. Through this, we strive to differentiate our film from previous Middle-Eastern and Afghan war films, laying the groundwork for securing funding and realizing our full-length feature film.
What Are We Doing Now?
Currently, (as of 3/27/24) we are in the pre-production phase of Surfing in Afghanistan, actively finalizing casting decisions, scouting locations, and refining the script to ensure its narrative integrity. Additionally, we are securing the logistical arrangements for the upcoming filming schedule. Our team is also assembling the crew and acquiring the equipment essential for capturing the film's vision with the highest production value.
Our Next Steps
Our focus shifts from pre-production to the principal photography phase for three days from May 29th to 31st. We will bring the script to life during this period, utilizing the dry lake beds in and around Ridgecrest, CA, to authentically depict the barren Afghan landscapes integral to the story.

Following filming, we will embark on the post-production process, encompassing editing, sound design, and color grading to refine the film's creative elements.
We are committed to keeping our supporters updated and engaged and will continue to do so through social media updates and outreach efforts, fostering a sense of community and anticipation for the project's completion.
