This past week, I had top surgery, a life-changing step in my gender-affirming journey. I’m incredibly grateful to have made it this far, but now comes the challenging part: recovery.

For the next 6–8 weeks, I’ll be out of work on an unpaid leave of absence, with no option for paid time off. That means I’ll have no income while I focus on healing, but I’ll still need to cover my usual expenses like bills, food, and caring for my pets.

Cost Breakdown

During recovery, here’s what my expenses look like:

Car payment & insurance (~$850) – My car is my only transportation for medical appointments, grocery runs, and daily life. Falling behind could risk repossession, which I can’t afford.

Pet care (2 dogs + 1 cat, ~$150) – They’re my family, my support system, and a huge source of comfort during recovery. Their food and care are non-negotiable.

Groceries & meals (~$200) – I live with ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), which makes meals more difficult and often more expensive. Having safe foods ensures I stay nourished while healing.

Medical & personal care needs (~$300) – Things like scar care, extra pillows, compression garments, and other recovery supplies add up quickly.

Together, these expenses total close to $1,500 for the recovery period.
