Support Paula Martinez's Stroke Recovery

Hey everyone,

My mom, Paula Martinez, is in the neuro ICU at Swedish Medical Center, a comprehensive stroke center in Denver, CO. Initially, she was receiving surgical care in North Platte, NE 8/12 late at night for medical treatment involving infection in the tonsils. What is currently suspected to be a case of Lemierre’s Syndrome, she suffered a stroke during the procedure, and undergoing sepsis, the infection spread to her carotid arteries and surrounding blood supply, resulting in clots preventing blood supply to her brain. She was urgently transported to Swedish Medical center 8/13 early morning where she immediately needed a craniotomy to divert the swelling of the right lobe from pushing into the left lobe, her healthy side, as well as removing the clots. Post-op, she is intubated, she has limited mobility on the right side of her body, and her left side remains paralyzed, where the extent of her paralysis is not yet known–currently complete paralysis. 8/13 another clot was discovered post-op, but it cannot be remedied yet so to prevent bleeding from her surgeries. 8/17 she received a tracheostomy to ease her breathing, and also had an artery tied to prevent further bleeding/infection. More fluid from her initial surgeries were drained. Though she is conscious, she isn’t quite “awake”. 8/20 she received an additional percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy. While she is receiving care, the weight of life outside of the hospital room remains, where medical bills and debt have accrued. The distance of traveling for visits are also out of state. The entire Martinez family is thankful for prayers and for any donations made to help our mom, who has been a friendly face in her community. This is a long-term recovery with updates being made every day, and our hearts reach out to everyone also affected by the news of her state.
